1Overview
2Introduction
This guide has been developed to assist users in creating a basic Data Entry Profile with OpenGround Professional and then demonstrate how this profile can then be used to quickly enter data using the Data Entry Extension within Professional. Note that there is also a Data Entry Application that is separate that can be used in place of the Professional Extension which functions the same and can be accessed using the OpenGround Launcher.
Data Entry Profiles are a great way to allow for users to enter data in a more efficient way without having to worry about the further details of the data model.
This will be done in the format of a tutorial, which can be followed along with to produce a replica Data Entry Profile while introducing core concepts and ideas.
Users are expected to have a basic understanding of how OpenGround is setup and how configurations function within the scope of configuration packs.
It is also expected that users have sufficient access to OpenGround to be able to create and administer components within a Configuration Pack and then be able to edit and add data within a project.
Note that this guide has been created with the US market in mind, hence the dimensions and outputs being suited to a US output. Due to this, the US configuration pack has been used.
However, this guide can be adapted to users across the world if needed.

The configuration pack used is the US Standard configuration pack which can be found here;

4Creating a Data Entry Profile
At the end of this tutorial, a user should be able to create a new Data Entry Profile within OpenGround Professional and then use this profile to enter data into a project.
Please note that the tutorial assumes that the user has access to an existing project on the relevant configuration pack. If this is not the case then it is recommended to follow the ‘PF1 - How to Create a Project’ tutorial to create a project to use.
4.1Starting Professional
Professional is launched from the OpenGround Launcher. Assuming that no updates are available for the application (if they are, install them if appropriate), press the Launch button next to the Professional application to launch the software.
4.2Viewing Configuration Packs and Existing Profiles
OpenGround Professional will then launch and a list of projects that are available will be listed. From there it is possible to view the configuration packs that are available and then see the Data Entry Profiles that are available (a number should be available as standard with the Configuration Pack).
Please note that the tutorial assumes that the user has access to be able to manage components within a Configuration Pack, if this is not the case then it is recommended to speak to the OpenGround Administrator.
Once Professional has opened, select the Configuration Packs option from under the Manage section of the System ribbon.
A list of Configuration Packs that are available will then be listed. Select the correct Configuration Pack from the list and then select the Manage Profiles option from the Data Entry section of the Configuration Tools ribbon.
The Configuration Tools ribbon is an example of a ‘Context Sensitive Ribbon’. These are ribbons that will appear, or change based on the currently selected feature. If the ribbon does not appear, or if it disappears when another feature is selected, click on the Configurations tab at the top of the grid to refocus the application and reenable to the Configuration Tools ribbon.
A list of all the available Data Entry Profiles will then appear. These can be Edited or the Manage Steps option used to change these as required. This tutorial will create a new Data Entry Profile but the same processes can be used to edit these existing profiles instead if needed.
4.3Creating a New Data Entry Profile
The next step is to create a Data Entry Profile that can then contain the steps for entering or editing data.
A Data Entry Profile is essentially a container that can contain a number of steps for entering data. These can be switched to enable a user to enter data in a different way or enter completely different data if needed.
Select the Create button in the Manage Profiles dialogue.
Enter the following details and then select the Save button.
- Profile Name – Test Pit Basics
- Active – Selected
- Creating a Data Entry Step
Now that the Data Entry Profile has been created, the next step is to create the first step in the profile. In this case, the step will be used to enter the location details (known as Point in gINT) and the information for the excavation information (This is split into 2 different tables within OpenGround, Location Details and Depth Related Exploratory Hole Information).
A Data Entry Step contains one or more Data Entry Grids. The Data Entry Grids will be created in the next step of the tutorial.
It is recommended to think about trying to group multiple Data Entry Grids together into one Data Entry Step where possible. For example, putting all of the insitu tests under one step or all of the lab tests.
Click on the Manage Steps option in the Manage Profiles dialogue.
The Data Entry Steps dialogue will then appear, select the Add button to create a new Data Entry Step. Enter or select the following information;
- Step Name – Location Information
- Active – Selected
- Location Controller – US – Location Details
- Primary Controller – Not Set
- Secondary Controller – Not Set
The US – Location Details Grid, selected as the Location Controller, is just a standard grid, just like what will be created further along in this tutorial. However, it is a special case as it acts as the location selecter for all of the grids in the step.
The Primary and Secondary Controllers will not be selected as they are not used in this step. However, these options will become apparent in future steps.
Click on the Save option to save the details for this step.
- Creating a Data Entry Grid
The Data Entry Step has now been created, and the Data Entry Step dialogue has closed and returned to a list of the available steps. In this section, a new grid will be created for the above Data Entry Step and applied.
A Data Entry Grid can be used in any Data Entry Step and in turn every Data Entry Profile that is present in the current configuration pack. This means that Data Entry Grids can be reused multiple times.
Click on the Data Entry Step created in the previous section, then select the Edit option (it will become available once the step has been selected).
Then select the Manage Grids option.
A list of all of the available Data Entry Grids will then be listed. Select the Create option.
The Data Entry Grid dialogue will then appear. Enter the following information;
- Grid Name – Location Depth Information
- Core Entity – Depth Related Exploratory Hole Information
It is then possible to choose which columns, and in which order, will be present in the grid. Select the following columns, in the following order;
- Depth Top
- Depth Base
- Type
- Logger
- Pit Length (Decimal)
- Pit Width (Decimal)
- Pit Stability
The Arrow Buttons in the middle of the Data Entry Grid dialogue can be used to bring columns into either the Available or the Allocated list. If the column is in the Allocated list, it will appear in the Data Entry Grid when opened by a Data Entry user.
The Arrow Buttons on the right hand side of the dialogue can be used to adjust the order of the columns in the grid. Select a column and then the buttons will become available.
Select the Type column in the Allocated List, then select the Defaults button.
Enter the following and then press Save;
- ‘TP’
Default Values will put a value into a column whenever a new record is entered. This can speed up Data Entry and can always be overwritten if incorrect when doing Data Entry.
Repeat the above with the Depth Top Column and enter the following;
- 0
Repeat the above with the Depth Base Column and enter the following;
- [LocationDetails.FinalDepth]
Press the Save option to save the Data Entry Grid and return to the Manage Grids dialogue. Press the Close option to return to the Data Entry Step that was created earlier. Find the Data Entry Grid that was just created in the left hand side of the dialogue in the Grids Available section and select it, then move it across to the Grids Allocated section.
The Arrow Buttons in the middle of the Data Entry Step dialogue can be used to bring grids into either the Available or the Allocated list. If the grid is in the Allocated list, it will appear in the Data Entry Step when opened by a Data Entry user.
The Arrow Buttons on the right hand side of the dialogue can be used to adjust the order of the grids in the step. Select a grid and then the buttons will become available.
Click on the Save option in the Data Entry Step dialogue, then select the Save button in the Data Entry Steps dialogue, then finally select Close.
- Using a Existing Data Entry Grids in a Data Entry Profile
There are a number of default Data Entry Grids that come by default in a standard Configuration Pack. These can be combined with custom grids or newly created Data Entry Profiles. Select the Configuration Packs option from under the Manage section of the System ribbon if the grid is not currently selected, select the required configuration pack, then select the Manage Profiles option in the Data Entry section of the Configuration Tools ribbon.
Select the previously selected profile and select the Manage Steps option.
Click on the Add option.
Enter the following information;
- Step Name – Geology and Details
- Active – Enabled
- Location Controller - US - Location Details
- Primary Controller – Not Set
- Secondary Controller – Not Set
Set the following grids to be allocated and in the following order and with the following positions;
- US – Field Geological Descriptions – Soil (TopLeft)
- US – Field Geological Descriptions – Rock (TopRight)
- US – Detail Descriptions (BottomLeft)
The positioning of a Data Entry Grid details where the grid will show within the Data Entry Step. There are 4 locations where a grid can appear, as in the below graphic.
If a location is used more than once, than the grids will become tabbed. For example, if 2 grids were set to be Top Left, then a tab would appear in the header area that would allow for selection of the relevant tab.
The space available will be filled if not all of the positions are selected. For example, if only a Top Left and a Bottom Left position are selected, then those grids will expand to fit the whole width of the screen.
The above shows how the grids can be positioned to show the maximum space when needed.
Click on Save to save the step and return to the list of Data Entry Steps.
- Creating another Step
The next step is to create further steps in the Data Entry Profile. In this case, an existing Sample grid will be used that will allow for the addition of new sample records.
This Data Entry Grid will be used for 2 functions within this tutorial. Firstly, as a grid for entering Sampling information as its own distinct step. Secondly, the grid will then be used to allow for the selection of the correct sample when entering lab testing data. This will be detailed further later on in this tutorial.
Click on the Add option in the Data Entry Steps dialogue.
Enter the following information;
- Step Name – Sampling
- Active – Enabled
- Location Controller - US - Location Details
- Primary Controller – Not Set
- Secondary Controller – Not Set
Set the following grids to be allocated and in the following order and with the following positions;
1. US – Sample Information (TopLeft)
Click on the Save option to save the changes and return to the list of available Data Entry Steps.
- Using a Controller Grid with Child Data
The next step is to allow for the addition of data that belongs further down the data tree in OpenGround. In this case, a few grids will be added into the Data Entry Step to allow for laboratory test data (Liquid Limits, Plastic Limits and Moisture Contents in this example) to be added against the previously recorded samples.
Click on the Add option in the Data Entry Steps dialogue.
Enter the following information;
- Step Name – Lab Tests
- Active – Enabled
- Location Controller - US - Location Details
- Primary Controller – US – Sample Information
- Secondary Controller – Not Set
The Primary Controller is used to select which parent record the data is being added to. In this case, lab testing related to the sample its being undertaken on.
When a Primary Controller is selected, the list of available Grids will update to show the Grids which require the correct Primary Controller to be selected.
Set the following grids to be allocated and in the following order and with the following positions;
- US – Liquid and Plastic Limit Tests (TopLeft)
- US – Moisture Content (Bottom Left)
Click on the Save option in the Data Entry Step dialogue, then select the Save button in the Data Entry Steps dialogue, then finally select Close.
5Entering Data in a Data Entry Profile
At the end of this tutorial, a user should be able to enter data in the newly created Data Entry Profile.
This part of the tutorial will guide on how to open the Data Entry Profile within a project and then show the basics of navigating the profile and entering data.
Note that it is also possible to open the Data Entry Profile using the Data Entry application from the OpenGround Launcher. This will function the same once opened.
This part of the tutorial will assume that the default Example Project listed in the Accompanying Files section will be used, however this process can be followed along with any project.
- Opening the Data Entry Profile within a Project
The Data Entry Profile created previously in this tutorial will now be available for all projects that belong to the Configuration Pack that the profile was created on.
Select the required project and then open it by either selecting the Open Project option in the ribbon, Right clicking on the project and selecting Open Project or by double clicking on the project in the list.
Although the above project is used in this example, any project can be used.

Once the project has opened, select the Data ribbon and then select the Data Entry option under the Extensions part of the ribbon.
The Data Entry dialogue will then appear, asking for the selection of the Data Entry Profile. Select the previously created profile and select Open.
The Data Entry Profile will then open.
- Navigating Data Entry
The Data Entry Profile will then load and show the first step in the profile. In this case, the first step will be the Location Depth Information which allows for data to be entered for the Trial Pit.
Any existing data will also be shown in the Data Entry Profile. Therefore this process can also work as a great way to edit existing data, not just add new data.
There are two ways of navigating between the different Data Entry Steps, either using the Navigation buttons, or using the Step Selection.
The far left and far right hand side options in the Navigation section of the ribbon allow to jump to the 1st or last Data Entry Step and the two other options will jump to the next or the previous step. Select the Step dropdown in the Profile section of the Data Entry ribbon and select the Sampling Data Entry Step.
The Location Selector can be used to select the correct location, select it and choose the location TP5.
A full list of all keyboard shortcuts available in Data Entry are available in the Help – Shortcut option in the ribbon.
- Entering Data and Viewing a Log Preview
Data can then be added or adjusted using the Data Entry Grid. Select the orange bar to create a new Sample record.
Unlike in Professional, all data is saved and stored once the cell has been exited. This means that data can be adjusted with more ease.
Enter the following information;
Depth Top – 5.0
Sample Reference – 2
Type – B
Length – 6
Sample Recovery – 5
Remarks – Blank
Sample ID – Blank
Press enter to force the application to update the calculated records in the grid.
When enter (or return) is pressed on a row in the Data Entry Grid, it will force any calculated fields to update. Note that the Depth Base and Recovery fields are calculated fields and will update with values in this case.
It is possible to see the newly created, or edited data on a borehole log to allow for a preview of how the data will appear. Select the Quick Log option in the Actions section of the ribbon.
A quicklog will then be produced with the newly added data present.
Note that the ribbon will update to show the Log Tools ribbon with newly available options available for use with the Quicklog.
Select the Data Entry tab in the ribbon and then select the Close option under the Data Entry section to close the Data Entry application.
