Following message appears when inserting / modifying a support:
W36-14: Support will be hidden since all gaps > gap scale
factor x Pipe O.D.
Why and what should be done?
As mentioned on the dialog, when the support gaps is larger that the Gaps Scale Factor x Pipe ID the support graphic will not be displayed. However, even though the support graphic is not shown, it still remains as port of the model. If the pipe displacement closes the gap, the support will restrain pipe movement as modeled.
Example:
Give the following 20 inch cantilever pipe with a large lateral force applied:
Analysis results calculated that the end point displacement would be ~ 52 inches.
Adding a support with gaps in all directions = 20 inches
Analysis results calculated that the end point displacement would be ~ 52 inches.
However, if the gap distance was increased to a value (ex. 21 inches) greater than the pipe OD (ex. 20 inches) x the support Scale factor (ex. 1.00)
Than the message above would appear
And, the support will not be displayed
Regardless, of the model graphics the support is still active in the analysis if the gaps were to close, only issue being the support will not be drawn on the graphical interface.:
As mentioned above, the support will be drawn only when all of the support's gap values are less than the Pipe OD x the Gap Scale factor.
If support is hidden from view, how to make support visible on the model:
Option #1: Change 1 of the support gap values to be less than the pipe OD x the gap scale factor
or
Option #2: Increase the Gap Scale factor
