QUESTION:For Vertical Shear- Strength I, How are the values of Mmax being calculated?

ANSWER:

There is no direct equation for calculation of Mmax in AASHTO.

CONSPAN uses the formula Mmax=Mu-Md , where Mu is factored( DL+ LL)  and Md = Total unfactored dead load moment.  

CONSPAN is following the PCI design manual approach.   

NCHRP reference also provides the same formula for calculation of Mmax. Please see the attached screenshot which shows how the calculation is done in Conspan.
