Problem Description
The Tasks dialog that is docked on the left side of the application by default in MicroStation V8i is missing or was accidentally turned off.
Steps to Resolve
Option 1 – Restart MicroStation
Close and reopen the software and the menus will typically reappear.
Note: This will only work if Save Settings was not applied after the Tasks menu was turned off
Option 2 - Turn on the Tasks dialog using the menu bar
Select Tools > Tasks from the pull down menus along the top of the screen.
If there is a check box next to Tasks, then the Task Bar menus should be displayed.
Option 3 - Turn on the Tasks dialog using a key-in
Open the key-in dialog (Utilities > Key-in)
Enter “DIALOG TASKNAVIGATION TOGGLE”
The following options apply if the Tasks is already checked in the Tools menu:
Option 4 – Dialog stuck off-screen

Option 5 – Rename the <user>.docking.xml file for the current user.
This file is located in the same folder as the UPF
- To find this location select Workspace
- Click Configuration
- Find MS_USERPREF, and note the path defined
- In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory listed for MS_USERPREF
- Rename the file to <user>.docking.xm
- Restart MicroStation.
A new <user>.docking.xml file will be created, from MS_DOCKINGPREFSEED, to replace the renamed one.
Option 6 – Include GUI.dgnlib in _USTN_SYSTEM_GUIDGNLIBLIST
Option 7 - Restore MicroStation to Factory Defaults
Note: This will reset all dialog positions as well as all docking and dialog display settings. It is recommended to try the other options before attempting this option.
