Background

This is a basic overview of what configuration changes have been made within MicroStation CONNECT Edition.

Configuration changes in MicroStation CONNECT Edition

Please note that the following is intended as an overview of the installation and configuration changes in MicroStation CONNECT Edition 10.00.00.25 compared to previous versions as well as any future releases.

Further information is available in the delivered help under:

Home > What's New? > New and Changed in MicroStation > Configuration

Please be sure to consult your site administrator of any changes being made to the configuration, as this may result in unwanted issues. I would also backup any original files and track changes being made (this will make it easier to undo any changes made if issues arise).

The previous Workspace System folder now with the product

In previous versions of MicroStation, the System folder and its subfolders and files, were delivered under the Workspace folder structure and contained Bentley delivered configuration files. This created problems, when CAD Administrators moved the Workspace folder and its subfolders and files, to a networked location.

This would normally work, but if changes were made to the System folder or its files between versions of the product, this created problems. So to solve this issue, CONNECT has now moved this folder, its subfolders and files to a folder named “Default” and it is now a subfolder of the product folder MicroStation (…\MicroStation\Default…).

This folder, subfolders and files should not be modified and should only contain the Bentley delivered configuration files.

Additional configuration levels added

There have been additional configuration levels added to CONNECT:

Further explanation of these can be found in the delivered help:

Home > Setting Up the Environment > Configuration > Configuration Concepts

Some of the terminology that has changed

·       Workspace is now Configuration

·       Site is now Organization

·       Project is now Workset

·       User now really means User

·       Worksets are now organized under a Workspace

Further explanation of this can be found in the delivered help:

Folder comparison and variable name changes

Below is a comparison of the delivered directory structure and some of the configuration variables that are most commonly worked with:

      V8i                                                  CONNECT Edition

NOTE: Pre-CONNECT Edition variables have line thru them and the variable listed below is what the CONNECT Edition is replacing it with.

_USTN_WORKSPACEROOT has been re-purposed

_USTN_WORKSPACEROOT is now used to define the root directory of a specific Workspace:

Some new key configuration variables

Here are some of the new configuration variables and their resulting folders in the new directory structure:

Something to be aware of with the new variables is the similarity between two sets of variables:

·       _USTN_WORKSPACEROOT and _USTN_WORKSPACESROOT      (notice the extra “S”)

·       _USTN_WORKSETROOT and _USTN_WORKSETSROOT                  (notice the extra “S”)

Further explanation of this can be found in the delivered help:

Home > What's New? > New and Changed in MicroStation > Configuration

Installation wizard has changed

In the new install wizard there has been a change. This change will now allow modifications to a few variables during the install process. When this is selected and set, an additional file gets generated and these changes are put in this file (WorkSpaceInstalledSetup.cfg). It is located in the same Configuration folder as the WorkSpaceSetup.cfg. While the _USTN_CONFIGURATION variable can be used, in most cases it will not be needed.

This new workflow is an attempt to minimize the amount of editing needed to redirect the product to an existing non-default configuration.
