How to interpretate solid stresses?

LOCAL COORDINATE SYSTEM OF SOLID ELEMENT

SOLID STRESS OUTPUT

Output of Element Stresses

Element stresses may be obtained at the center and at the joints of the solid element. The items that are printed are :

Normal Stresses : SXX, SYY and SZZ

Shear Stresses : SXY, SYZ and SZX

Principal stresses : S1, S2 and S3

Von Mises stresses: SIGE = 0.707[(S1 - S2)2 + (S2 - S3)2 + (S3 - S1)2]1/2

SOLID STRESS OUTPUT
(NORMAL STRESS)

•Positive values for SXX, SYY and SZZ indicate tensile stresses.
•Negative values for SXX, SYY and SZZ indicate compressive stresses.
SOLID STRESS OUTPUT
(SHEAR STRESS)

•A positive SZX is on plus Z face in plus X direction.
•A positive SXZ is on plus X face in plus Z direction.
•A positive SZY is on plus Z face in plus Y direction.
•A positive SYZ is on plus Y face in plus Z direction.
•A positive SXY is on plus X face in plus Y direction.
•A positive SYX is on plus Y face in plus X direction.
