MDL Applications will not load since they are not digitally signed

 Product:MicroStation
 Version:V8i, CONNECT
 Environment:N\A
 Area:Programming
 Subarea:General

Problem

When I try to load my MDL applications within MicroStation, I am met with the following error message. This issue occurs with one or more MDL applications.

In earlier versions of MicroStation, the following messages may also be outputted:

- ERR: "application name not signed!" (i.e. this application has not been signed or does not have a signature stamp)
- ERR: "application name not trusted!" (i.e. this message means that it could not find the signed certificate within any of the directories specified by the MicroStation environment variable MS_SECURITY_SPC)

Solution

MicroStation is running in High Security mode and the specific MDL applications are not trusted or signed.
The issue can arise if running Bentley applications (such as CivTools) or other 3rd party applications (such as Axiom) when in MicroStation's High Security Mode.

In order to resolve this issue, follow these steps:

In MicroStation v8i SS10:

1. Within Windows File Explorer, navigate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 10)
2. Run MicroStation v8i SS10 with the normal shortcut and not the High Security variant as shown.

3. You should now be able to run your MDL apps without issue while in MicroStation.

In MicroStation CONNECT:

1. Within Windows File Explorer, navigate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MicroStation CONNECT Edition\MicroStation CONNECT Edition
2. Run MicroStation CONNECT with the normal shortcut and not the High Security variant as shown.

3. You should now be able to run your MDL apps without issue while in MicroStation.
