Problem

MS_RFDIR character limitations

Solution

255 characters per path and 30,000 total characters.

In MicroStation V8 2004 Edition and earlier, MS_RFDIR had a limit of about 30,000 characters it could "store" and about 255 characters for the paths.

If you are running MicroStation 08.09.03 or later, it is possible to increase the maximum size of MS_RFDIR by setting the configuration variable MS_MAXCFGVAR_SIZE to the number of Kbytes required.

For example, to set the maximum configuration variable size to 64K, you'd set MS_MAXCFGVAR to 64.

As you are probably aware, the downside to putting many directories into MS_RFDIR are:

1. If you have multiple files with the same name in two different directories, you might find the wrong file.
2. It might take MicroStation a long time to search all those directories, particularly if the reference file isn't in any of them.

That could make file opening quite slow.
