How to modify the tools within the View Control Bar

How can I modify the Tools within the View Control Tool bar?

Background

Before making any changes, ask yourself why do I want to change the View Control Tool Bar?

It may be the View Control Bar is missing from the Views and you wish to restore them. If this is the case, then there is an option to Enable/Disable its display and position within the view in the User Preference.  See Using the View Controls

It may be an individual Tool normally available is missing from the View Control Tool Bar. If this is the case it may be the active Model is restricting its visibility. For example, if a 2D Model is active, then only the 2D Tools are available.

In addition. if the Model is not restricting the tools availability, it could be that the Tools display has been disabled. To check this, press the Right Mouse Button on one of the visible View Control Bar Tools to display a list of those available.

Also consider using the Ribbon Group Pop-Up (With the cursor in the View, press and hold down the <Shift> key.

If having reviewed the above and the required Tool is still unavailable, or you wish to modify the behavior then Customization is required. Before proceeding it is recommended you consult with your Site Administrator as changes may be beneficial to others or an alternative method may be more appropriate, such as an organizations Customized Workflow Ribbon or add to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1. Copy and Modify existing View Control Tools

The following steps are offered as a guide to customizing the View Control Bar available to 3D Models, by copying and modifying the as delivered Tools.

(If the Tool is beneficial to all your organizations users then seek assistance of your Site Administrator so they can modify the appropriate *.dgnlib and Configuration)

  1. Open your Personal.dgnlib (Default Path: C:\Users\User name\AppData\Local\Bentley\MicroStation\10.0.0\Prefs\Personal.dgnlib)
  2. Open the Customize dialog (Admin > Home > Environment > Customize)
  3. From the Customize dialog selected ‘Custom Tools and Tasks’
  4. Expand the available 'Application Tools' and select '3D View Control'
  5. Select the 'Copy' tool
  6. Expand the 'User Tools' and select the Personal.dgnlib
  7. Select the 'Paste' Tool
  8. Expand the pasted 3D View Control toolbox
  9. Modify, Create and Delete the Tools as required.
  10. Close the dgnlib and open a 3D Model to see the changes.

Note. Select the '2D View Control' in step 4. to change the tools available when working in 2D Models  

Option 2. Configure MicroStation to use Custom Toolbox

This option allows you to replace the existing the Existing View Control Bar Tools with another available existing or custom Toolbox.

  1. Open any file
  2. Open the Configuration Variables dialog (File > Settings > Configuration ConfigurationVariables)
  3. Search for the Variable MS_VIEWTOOLBOX2D
  4. Select Edit and enter the name of the available Tool Box required. ('Annotate' for example)
  5. Select OK and Save.
  6. Close the file
  7. Open a 2D Model and verify changes.

Note: For 3D View Control Bar Tools, use the Variable MS_VIEWTOOLBOX3D
