Background

In the CONNECT edition, Drawing Title is renamed as Drawing Boundary. So Drawing Boundary is the physical representation of a drawing area on a sheet. If you create drawings on sheets by attaching references, then the Drawing Boundary is a physical representation of a reference attachment. It also helps as a navigation aid to find the sheet on which a given view is attached.

Recommendations

There are now two methods of placing Drawing Boundaries.

  1. By 2-Point
  2. By Element

By 2 Point method

This is the way we use to create the Drawing Boundary (i.e. Drawing Title in previous releases).

First place a data point that represents the first corner of the drawing boundary. Next place a second data point that represents the opposite corner of the drawing boundary. Then place Drawing Boundary bubble.

By Element method

This is the new way of creating a drawing Boundary. Using this method you can convert any closed shape on a sheet into a drawing Boundary. So now users can create a Drawing Boundary that is in the shape of a circle, an ellipse, or even a cloud.

After setting the method to “By Element” you select the Element that will form the boundary and then select a data point to place Drawing Boundary bubble.

Detailing Symbol Styles

In the Detailing Symbol Styles for Drawing Boundary, two new settings have been added, namely, Annotation Display and Boundary Display.  These properties can be set to visible or hidden.

With Boundary Display, you can show or hide the boundary display of the Drawing Boundary. If it is hidden then the user will not see any boundary.

With Annotation Display, you can show or hide the actual drawing boundary annotation, that consists of the bubble and title. If it is hidden, you will not see the Drawing Boundary annotations.

How Drawing Boundaries are used

You can divide your sheet using these drawing boundaries and then attach references into those boundaries. Also in this release, drawing boundaries have saved view type associated to them.

Drawing Boundaries contained in the DGNLib can also be used to create named boundaries. The shape of the Drawing Boundary is used to determine the size and shape of Named Boundary. Then using the Create Drawing dialog, those named boundaries can be used to create saved views and have them placed in a sheet model that contains Drawing Boundaries. For example, if you have a circular drawing boundary in the DGNLib, then a circular named boundary and a saved view is created and that saved view can be fitted perfectly into the circular drawing boundary in your sheet model.

When you attach a reference to a sheet model, you can choose in which drawing boundary that reference should be attached. You can see the drawing boundaries in the drop down as shown in the below image.

The reference is attached into the selected Drawing Boundary. You can also create a new drawing boundary by choosing the (New) Option. In that case, the reference will be attached at the center of the sheet. You may also decide not to create a Drawing Boundary by choosing the (None) option.
