How to open, import and reference GIS files
This includes SHP, MIF/MID and TAB file formats.
Steps to Accomplish
To Open a GIS File
- Go to: File > Open
The Open dialog opens - To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type list
- (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
- Select the desired file
- Click Open
To Import a GIS File
- Go to: File > Import > CAD Files
The Import dialog opens - To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type list
- (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
- Select the desired file
- Click Open
To Attach a GIS File as a Reference
- Go to: File > References
The References dialog opens - Choose Tools > Attach
The Attach Reference dialog opens - To change the filter, select “Shapefiles (*.shp),” “MIF/MID Files (*.mif),” or “TAB Files (*.tab)” from the Files of type: list
- (Optional) To select a different source disk drive or directory, choose the desired drive or directory from the Look in list
- Select the desired file
- Click Open
The Reference Attachment Settings dialog opens - In the Reference Attachment Settings dialog's Orientation list box, select the desired option
- Click OK
