Problem

When attempting to attach a file as a reference in MicroStation, an error message appears:

"The tag present in the reparse point buffer is invalid"

And the reference is never attached. The file can also not be directly opened.

Solution

This is a problem with Microsoft OneDrive Synchronization on the machine and not with MicroStation itself.
Open OneDrive in a web browser and log-in.
Navigate to the affected file and download it from the cloud.
Attach this downloaded backup copy as a reference.
