With the CONNECT Edition of MicroStation, Bentley has introduced a plethora of new features which seamlessly integrate with MicroStation’s strong Drawing Composition capabilities. Named Boundaries is one such feature.

Recommendations

Named Boundary is not a new concept; in previous editions of MicroStation it was known as Named Fence, Named Clip Volume, and Named Clip Mask. Having said that, the approach of looking at these preexisting features in this edition of MicroStation is certainly new. MicroStation has unified the commonalities of these widely used features and enhanced them in the form of Named Boundary. As the name suggests, it is just a boundary with user specified name. This simplicity of thought put behind designing Named Boundary feature makes it a very useful element.

Apart from creating Named Boundaries from two points, existing shape and By Length, you can make Named Boundaries with the new and improved Drawing Boundary elements.

While creating Named Boundary from Drawing Boundary, it is very important to know about Detail Scales; Detail Scales represents the Master:Ref scale in terms of the sheet scale.

While creating standalone named boundaries is certainly a useful feature, creating it as a part of Named Boundary Group enhances its utility ten folds. Just to understand the real strength of this concept consider the example of a roadway. (Refer the help topic To Place an Array of Named Boundaries Along a Path inside Drawing Composition > View Composition and Sheet Composition > Automating Dynamic Views > Place Named Boundary).

For each one of the named boundaries shown here, we can create multiple saved views and place those saved views in sheet models as references using Create Drawing dialog. Take a look at Automating sheet creation using drawing boundaries and named boundaries to know more about it.

To make administration and usage of Named Boundaries easier, MicroStation has a new Named Boundaries dialog.

With Apply Named Boundary As Clip Mask, Named Fence, and Clip Volume features, the sanctity of old features remains intact and it also adds to the versatility with which Named Boundary elements can be used.
