Option A: through PLAXIS Designer

In PLAXIS Designer: Import > File > Choose appropriate DXF contour file

Create:
1. Grid
2. Mesh

  1. Create Grid
    1. Select all polylines > Right Click > Convert to Grid via Kriging
      Here you can adjust:
      1. kriging settings
      2. the density of your grid by clicking “Define Gridlines…” then choosing “Add Regular” and updating the settings.
    2. Click OK to generate the grid
  2. Create Mesh
    1. Select necessary Polylines > Right Click > Convert > To Mesh

Then transfer to PLAXIS 2D LE:

Do this by either:
1. Copy and Paste from PLAXIS Designer to PLAXIS 2D LE Surfaces
2. Create model volume in PLAXIS Designer, then generate PLAXIS 2D LE model

  1. Copy and Paste from PLAXIS Designer to PLAXIS 2D LE Surfaces
    1. In SVSLOPE:
      1. Geometry > Surfaces > New or Select an existing Surface > Properties
Note: surfaces are listed in order of highest to lowest elevation.
      2. Definition Options: Choose Grid or Mesh depending on which type you have
    2. Paste from PLAXIS Designer
  1. Create model volume in PLAXIS Designer, then generate PLAXIS 2D LE model
    1. Create region to enclose the plan view extents of the volume
    2. New > Volume…
      1. Add and select appropriate region
      2. Add at least (2) surfaces
        1. Select appropriate surface(s) in order or highest to lowest elevation
          1. Set surface 1 as constant and set constant elevation
      3. Select Volume > Right Click > Actions > Generate Model > Specify model parameters > OK

Option B: with PLAXIS 2D LE

Create:

  1. Grids
  2. Meshes
  1. Grids

Note: Grids can be generated in PLAXIS 2D LE in similar fashion to how they are generated in PLAXIS Designer, using kriging. This is done in the Surfaces dialog.

  1. Geometry > Surfaces > Select Surface to edit > Properties
Note: surfaces are listed in order of highest to lowest elevation.
  2. Definition Options: Grid
  3. Import Scatter Data > Import From File > Choose appropriate DXF file
  4. Select appropriate object (“contours for model”)
    1. Click OK to warning of duplicate points if applicable
  5. Define Gridlines…
This is where you can adjust the grid density
    1. Add Regular > Adjust accordingly for both X Grid Lines and Y Grid Lines
  6. Move to the Interpolations Tab to adjust kriging settings if necessary
  7. Generate
  8. OK
  1. Meshes

Note: meshes cannot be generated in PLAXIS 2D LE, only copied from PLAXIS Designer or other meshing platforms

  1. Copy mesh values
    1. Geometry > Surfaces > New or select existing surface to edit > Properties
    2. Definition Options: Mesh
      1. Paste mesh data
    3. OK
