Best Practices: Process and Upload Georeferenced Reality Mesh to Reality Management


Best practices to process and upload georeferenced reality mesh to the Reality Management service for consumption in iTwins.

Prerequisites

You will need:

Steps

1. Create a new iTwin Capture Modeler project

1.1. Open iTwin Capture Modeleror iTwin Capture Modeler Center

1.2. Click the New project… button

1.3. In the Project name field, type a name for your new project

1.4. Click the Browse button next to the Project location field to select the location on your computer where you want to save your new project

1.5. (Optional) Type a description for your new project in the Description field

1.6. Click the Associate iTwinbutton to select an iTwin where you will want to upload the processed reality mesh

1.7. Click OK to create your new project

2. Add photos to the iTwin Capture Modeler project

2.1 In the application window's upper-right corner, click the New Capture button and select the New Block option

2.2. Click the Photos tab

2.3. Click the Add photos… button to select the photos on your computer that you want to process

2.4. (Optional) If you have a file that contains information about the project's photo positions, click the Import Positions... button (video tutorial)

Tip: Select the appropriate VCS for project's photo positions. If you are not sure about which to use, validate with the manufacturer of the acquisition device(s).

3. (Optional) Add ground control points

3.1. If Ground Control Points were acquired for the project, click the Surveys tab

3.2. Click the Add button

3.3. Type a name for the new control point

3.4. In the Type list, select Control Point

3.6. In the Coordinate list, select the CRS of the control point you are creating

3.6. Type the values, in the selected CRS, of the control point you are creating

3.7. Click the Create to add the new control point to the list

Tip: Click the Edit button to set additional control point options (category, accuracy, check point, etc.)

3.8. Define the new control point's position:

3.8.1. Select the new control point in the list

3.8.2. Select a photo where the control point is visible

3.8.3 Move the yellow marker on the control point's position
Tip: Use Shift+Click to set the position directly on the photo.

3.8.4. Click Accept position

3.8.5. Repeat the sequence of operations above in several photos

Tip: If your control point are saved in a text file, you may use the Import button to speed up the creation of new control points.

4. Submit processing of the aerotriangulation

4.1. Click the Submit Aerotriangulation button

4.2. (Optional) Modify the default Name and Description

4.2.1. Click Next

4.3. In the Positioning/georeferencing page, adjust the settings according to your project's data

4.3.1. Click Next

4.4. In the Settings page, adjust the setting according to your project's data

4.4.1. Click Submit

Tip: Don't forget to start the iTwin Capture Modeler Engine

5. Submit processing of the reality mesh

5.1. Click the New Reconstruction button

5.2. Select the 3D Reconstruction option

5.3. Click the Spatial Framework tab

5.3.1. (Optional) Select the CRS which the tiles and Region of Interest are drawn

5.3.2. (Optional) Select a Region of Interest (i.e. the area in which the reality mesh will be generated)

5.3.3. Select a Tiling mode according to your machine's resources

5.4. Click the Submit Production button

5.5. (Optional) Modify the default Name and Description

5.5.1. Click Next

5.6. In the Purpose page:

5.6.1. Select Export 3D mesh

5.6.2. Click Next

5.7. In the Format/Options page:

5.7.1. Select Bentley Scalable Mesh (3SM) in the Format list

5.7.2. Toggle ON the Generate Web-Ready Scalable Mesh checkmark

5.7.3. Review the other setting in the page

5.7.4. Click Next

5.8. In the Spatial Reference System page:

5.8.1. Select the CRS that you want for the processed reality mesh

5.8.2. Click Next

5.9. In the Extent page:

5.9.1. Review the setting in the page

5.9.2. Click Next

5.10. In the Destination page:

5.10.1. Select the location on your computer where you want to save the processed reality mesh

5.11.1. Click Submit

Tip: Don't forget to start the iTwin Capture Modeler Engine

6. Control the quality of the processed reality mesh

6.1. Select the processed reality mesh

6.2. In the Overview tab, click Open with iTwin Capture Desktop Viewer link

6.3. Use the viewer's navigation tools to visually assess the quality of the processed reality mesh

6.4. Use the Measure tools to validate the processed reality mesh geolocation against known control points

7. Upload the processed reality mesh to Reality Management

7.1. Go back to iTwin Capture Modeler or iTwin Capture Modeler Center

7.2. Select the processed reality mesh

7.3. In the application window's upper-right corner, click the Share button: 

7.4. Review the selected iTwin (the processed reality mesh will be automatically associated to that iTwin)

7.5. Click the Upload Data button to initiate upload of the processed reality mesh
