Wire numbers not in the correct format

 Environment:N/A
 Area:Wire Numbering
 Subarea:Automatic Wire Numbering

Problem Description

Wire tags, also known as wire numbers, are not based on the correct format (page-line number, sequential, etc.).

Reason

The most common cause of unexpected wire numbers is that the wire tag format may have been set as desired for one type of connection but not for all the others.  The Standard, Terminal, Cable, and PLC wire tag formats define what the wire tag will be for wires connected to those types of devices. This allows wire numbers to use different formats for wires connected to different types of devices. For example, wires connected to PLC I/O points could be numbered with the PLC address while all other wires are numbered sequentially.

A common misconception is that the wire tag formats specified in Project Options apply when assigning wire numbers manually using the [[Wiring Manager]] (formerly [[Assign/Edit Wire Number]]). By manually assigning wire numbers, it is assumed the user wants to specify the wire number themselves, and the wire tag format is not applied.  Wire tag formats specified in Project Options are only applied by the [[Automatic Wire Number]] tool.

Steps to Resolve

To specify wire tag formats in V8i SELECTseries 7 and 8

  1. Select [[Options]] > Project Options > Wire Settings > Label Preferences
  2. Click the Edit button next to the Standard, Terminal, Cable, or PLC format and configure as desired.

In V8i SELECTseries 5 and 6

  1. Select [[Options]] > Project Options > Wire Options > Label Preferences
  2. Click the Edit button next to the Standard, Terminal, Cable, or PLC format and configure as desired.

In V8i SELECTseries 3 and earlier

  1. Select [[Options]] > Project Options > Wire Options
  2. Click the Edit button next to the Standard, Terminal, Cable, or PLC format and configure as desired.

If all wire numbers are to have the same format in the project, set the Wire Tag Format for wires connected to all types of devices (Standard, Terminal, Cable, PLC) the same.

After changing the wire tag format(s), wire numbers already assigned in the project do not automatically update to the new format.  Use the [[Automatic Wire Number]] tool to overwrite such wire numbers.
