Overview

Steel beams are usually fabricated to fit up to another beam. In order for the beams to fit perfectly, coping and slotting are required. Coping or notching of beams is required to ensure that beams and columns fit without conflict (interference). It is often necessary to remove material from a flange or web in order for the intersecting steel pieces to fit. 

This document will guide you to add copes to intersecting beams using the cope command.

Method

Enter methods to resolve in this section. 
1) Focus on your intersecting beams, where you want to apply the cope. 



2) Now click on the Home > Edit Steel Elements > Modify > Cope. 



3) The command will now prompt you to select the shape that has to be coped and then select the shape to cope at. 



4) The cope gets added to the shape according to the default / previously set parameters. Here you can set the layout and dimensions of the cope. There is a handy sketch of the Cope layout to the right of the dialog box to help in understanding which parameter controls what part of the cope. 



5) Once you are done setting the parameters according to your requirement, click on OK. The cope will update and get added to your shape member. 



In this manner, you can cope your intersecting or beams and other members and save your commonly used settings as a template so that you can easily recall this in a single click every time you use the cope command.
