Overview

Sometimes, a user may need a bit more control over how a Tap Port is placed.  Typically, tap ports can only be placed along the circumference on the top or bottom of the pipe and at a 90 degree angle of the mainline. This works well for most taps, but there are times when a tap needs to be coming in at an angle other then 90, such as 45, 30 or even some angles that aren't typical. It all depends on what the user needs at the time. AutoPLANT has an option that allows uses to insert tap ports for olets and other connecting components to a mainline at almost any angle or orientation that is needed. This option is called the Advanced Tap Port Method.

Turning on the Advanced Tap Port Method

In order to use the Advanced Tap Port Method, it has to be turned on first. To do this, go to Piping>Setup>Drawing Preferences and check the Advanced Tap Port Method check box under the "Other Settings" area. Press the OK button to accept the change.

After this is done, a dialog will appear prompting for the user to review the help on the Advanced Tap Port Method. It is recommended that this information be review because it can help in working with this feature.

Basic Steps to placing a Tap Port using Advanced Tap Port Method

Using the Advanced Tap Port Method, one can get connections like the one seen below. This example is not a typical connection, but it gives an idea of the freedom that comes with this feature. Always be sure that the angle and connections that are being attempted with this tool can be done in the field.

  1. To begin the using this feature, place a tap port as normal, Piping>Branches Components>Olets>Tap Port
  2. Select Component
  3. Select the Base Port or end point that will be the reference point for placing the tap port
  4. Enter the Distance of the tap port, this is the distance along the pipe from the Base port to the tap port
  5. Pick a Main Size for the Tap Port
  6. Enter a Position of the tap, this is typically along the circumference of the pipe but I can be any were in the model, even not on the pipe
  7. Enter the orientation of tap port, this is the angle at which the tap port will be
  8. Once the tap port is placed, connect an olet to that tap port and notice the placement of it

The best way for one to understand how the Advance Tap Port Method works is to practice with it.  It can be a bit difficult to work with, but it can help in those difficult jobs.  Another thing to consider is to setup construction lines for placing the tap ports.  These construction lines can be references (combined with OSNAP) to help place the tap port in the exact location.
