ProjectWise and dat Files

OpenRail Overhead Line Designer stores OLE model information in an external .dat file, that has the same name as the dgn file.

DAT files - OpenRail Wiki

 When working with ProjectWise, this dat file must be manually checked in/out together with the dgn file.

Creating the model first time

When a new file is created in a PW folder, the same file will also be checked out to a local folder while working on the model. This file is stored in the relevant folder inside the working PW folder in the local file system.

Contents of local and PW folder after dgn file is created (OLE_PW2.dgn)

In OpenRail Overhead Line Designer when an OLE related tool is used the container dat file will be created.

Contents of local and PW folder after OLE tools are used. Notice how OLE_PW2.dat file is created in the local file but not in the PW folder.

This related dat file should be copied into the PW directory and managed manually.

Opening an Existing Model

Next time the model will be opened from the PW folder, dat file should first checked out manually and afterwards the corresponding dgn file should be opened. This ensures when the dgn file is opened, latest version of the corresponding dat file is already copied into the local working directory.

After working with the model and closing the file, PW will ask for checking in the dgn file;

this will only check in the dgn file but not the corresponding dat file. So dat file should be manually checked in afterwards;

Displaying the local working directory name for a PW folder

To display local working directory of a PW folder a new View should be created.

Go to View -> Manage Views.. in PW Explorer.

Create a new view, give it a name and add Folder Id as a column

Change view to newly created View by right clicking the column headers and selecting Select View.

Folder id information is now visible.
