Overview
Description Builder is a tool found within SpecGen. It can be used to build LONG_DESCR (Long Description) and the PIECE_MARK for components in a spec. The settings placed in this tool can either apply to the entire spec or on individual rows. This article goes over the possible ways to access this tool and goes over building a LONG_DESCR with it.
Applying to the Entire Spec
The first way that this tool can be access will allow the user to create a default LONG_DESCR format that will apply to the entire Spec. To do this, simply go to Spec>Default Description Builder in SpecGen.
Applying to an Individual Row
The second way that this tool can be access only applies the changes to an individual row. This is done by right clicking on a selected row and selecting the "Description Builder" option from the right click menu.
Using the Description Builder
Once the Description Builder has been loaded, be it for the whole spec or the individual row, the following dialog will appear.
From here, the LONG_DESCR (Long Description) can be modified by pressing the Edit button, which will load the following dialog.
To change value, either type the desired information into the Definition area or select the field from the list and press the down arrow. If the up arrow is press, then the Definition area will be cleared. Pressing the Preview button at any time will display an example of what the LONG_DESCR will appear like in the database. Below is an example that pulls Main Size, Rating and Schedule.
This was done on the section with just Flanges, so only the Rating came in. Notice how the second 'x' doesn't appear at the end. This is because of the square brackets. If the text is enclosed by them and the next field is not available, in this case the Schedule, then the program will ignore this text.
Description Viewer
One other helpful feature in SpecGen is to use the "Description Viewer" located under the Spec pull down menu.
This tool displays a list of the format of the description and piece mark for each section and that section's row. This can help determine what rows need to be changed when making specific descriptions or piece marks. In the example of this below, notice that the PIPE section is different then the DEFAULT and the FLANGE sections.
