Overview

While launching OpenPlant Modeler, Startup error text window prompts which does not allow user to move ahead and modeler needs to close OpenPlant Modeler.

Problem Description

OpenPlant Modeler throws error at start up. There are different cases where user will see similar error but reason for the failure to start up could be different for each case. We will discuss different cases in this article.

Case 1

See Error message and image for references

Error Message in Text window:

OpenPlnat Modeler was unable to create a connection using the schema defined by the OPM_PRIMARY_SCHEMA configuration variable. The following exception was encountered: Failed to read ECSchema from ‘C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenPlantModelerv8i\Workspace\project\OPModeler_MMetric\Dataset\Schemas\OpenPlant_3D.01.06.ecschema.xml’.

OpenPlant Modeler will exit.

While clicking ok it will display another dialog.

User need to abort the session and further not able to launch OpenPlant Modeler. There might be several issues causing this. However one of the reason has been explained below to fix it. Further based on several cases causing above error, the article will get updated if found suitable solution to it.

Steps to Resolve

  1. In the case above, Launch Bentley class Editor and open the above described schema which is creating a problem.

  2. Open “OpenPlant_3D.01.06.ecschema”.

  3. It will display below error, which was creating a problem. See below image.

  4. With the reason explained in dialog, it is clear that some property defined on some class do not have correct datatype and thus conflicting the property which is existing at its parent class.

  5. Navigate to schema folder.

  6. Open “OpenPlant_3D.01.06.ecschema” using Notepad.

  7. Search for NOMINAL_SIZE. See image below.

  8. Rename it to any Name, Say NOMINAL_SIZE1 here. See image below.

Note - Alternatively user can also change the typeName to "string" and fix the issue.

  9. Save & Close file.

  10. Launch OpenPlant Modeler & verify Result. It should allow the application to open.

  11. Using Class Editor, it will allow user to open Schema and thus change the datatype for defined property or use different Property Name.

Case 2

Below error message appears on startup of OpenPlant Modeler.

Reason

As mentioned in the error message, OPM_PRIMARY_SCHEMA parameter is null. If you check this variable in project PCF file, it's value is OpenPlant_3D.01.07 schema which is not found in the location where it is supposed to be and hence the error.

Location of this schema is derived by another configuration variable as shown below.

Below is the location where this schema should be present, but it is missing in the folder which is the reason for the above error message.

In this case user had accidently moved schema to another location and hence the error.

Steps to Resolve

Copy OpenPlant_3D schema back into the above location if you have backup of it.

Case 3 - Managed Workspace

When OpenPlant Modeler is launched through ProjectWise managed workspace, below error message appears.

Settings to Check

This error could appear due to several reasons which can be resolved by checking the settings listed below. To troubleshoot the issue, full access to user is required which may include making changes through ProjectWise Administrator.

  1. In ProjectWise Administrator, check if below variables are defined correctly in Project CSB. These variables should be pointing to the schema folders as shown below.

  2. Check below variable in the Project CSB if it is defined correctly.

  3. Check the managed workspace associations attached to the file being opened from ProjectWise Explorer.

  4. Check the schema folder if OpenPlant_3D schema exists in ProjectWise Explorer.

Once all the above settings are corrected it should launch the application without any error.

Case 4

Launching OpenPlant Modeler from desktop returns below error.

Reason

In this case user switched from one workspace to another and as a result of that when application was launched, there was no project selected in Project field and hence the application could not find the schema.

Steps to Resolve

Selected the desired project from the list and the DGN file to open.
