No. Any build prior to SS1 has to be removed before SS1 build can be installed.
How to properly remove any old BRCM installation before installing BRCM SS1 version?
To properly remove old BRCM build follow steps outlined below:
- Backup (create a copy of) entire workspace.
- Export BRCM project database (you will need to create a folder where project database should be exported before launching BRCM Database Export to XML tool).
- Use Control Panel to remove the old BRCM version.
- Make sure that all files are removed properly before proceeding with BRCM SS1 install.
Are there any changes in installation process in BRCM SS1?
Bentley Raceway and Cable Management V8i SELECTseries 1 is utilizing new installation wizard to install both BRCM and SQL Express.
Once installation package for version 08.11.08.09 is [[How to download the Bentley Raceway and Cable Management software|downloaded]], launch executable brcm08110809en.exe and start extraction process.

Do I need to update or change SQL setup?
No need to make updates to SQL server or BRCM database if it was previously used on a BRCM project and configured correctly.
Do I need to change PCF files?
A new variable is added in Bentley Raceway and Cable Management V8i SELECTseries 1:
BRCM_WS_RACEWAY_TEMPLATES
Update all old PCF files that will be used with BRCM SS1 with this variable. Specify the path to the dataset/raceway/Templates folder for this variable.
Getting "dataset no longer supported" message, what should I do?
If user installs SS1 version but is using the old dataset, user will be prompted to update the dataset.
BRCM will automatically update the dataset with files essential for BRCM SS1 to function.
Automatic dataset update will overwrite all customization that was done in the old BRCM dataset.
Proceed with this function only if you don’t have any customization that you would like to preserve (custom raceway or equipment catalogs, special level or tag/text style settings, cable types…)
I did customize old BRCM dataset, what is proper way to update new BRCM SS1 dataset with my customization?
Do not copy entire configuration files from pre-SS1 release to SS1 release workspace. This may cause malfunction with new BRCM version.
Best approach is to use a file comparison tool (Beyond Compare for example) and copy customized sections from pre-SS1 configuration files to SS1 configuration files.
Most commonly used workflow for dataset update is outlined below:
- Install BRCM on machine with workspace located on a local drive.
- Compare the old dataset with new dataset (using file compare tool for example).
- Copy modified dataset sections from old dataset file into same files in SS1 dataset.
- Copy modified SS1 dataset to designated dataset location that will be used for production (PW or network drive).
Dataset automatic update for dataset managed by ProjectWise (assuming there are no customization that needs to be preserved in workspace managed by PW) is also possible, but it may take longer time to automatically copy and replace dataset files.
It is recommended to do manual copy from local workspace to workspace in ProjectWise.
Only customization I have in the old dataset are new cable types, how can I transfer my old cable types into BRCM SS1?
No change has been made in LibCable.XML file in SS1 so this file can be copied from older BRCM versions to Bentley Raceway and Cable Management V8i SELECTseries 1.
Can Raceway placed in old BRCM version be used in BRCM SS1?
All raceway and equipment placed with older BRCM versions can be used in Bentley Raceway and Cable Management V8i SELECTseries 1.
New raceway attributes (UDA attributes) are added in BRCM SS1, so if new UDA attributes should be added to old raceways, the Raceway Properties tool can be used to add new attributes to existing raceways.
Cable laying method is now defined in Raceway Router. Depending on your project requirements you may want to define cable laying method for old raceways as well using the Raceway Properties tool.
Are there any changes to cable routing logic and cable routing methods in SS1?

After installing BRCM SS1 and attempting to use new tools, I am seeing a "command is not available in this design file" message
In Bentley Raceway and Cable Management V8i SELECTseries 1, new file types are introduced with the purpose of preventing users from using Cable Manager in files other than routing files, and to reinforce design separation into different files.
New file types are shown in the Document Manager:
- Routing Model file type should be selected for routing files only. Only cable management and reporting tools will work in this file type
- 3D Model, Raceway file type should be used for raceway and cable trench design files only. Only raceway and cable trench design and editing tools and reporting tools will work in this file type
- 3D Model, Equipment file type should be used for equipment files only. Only equipment placement and editing tools and reporting tools will work in this file type.
- 3D Model, Equipment * Raceway file type should be used only when equipment and raceway will be placed in the same DGN file. All equipment and raceway tools will work in this file type. This file type should also be used for duct bank design (manholes are considered electrical equipment). All tools with exception of cable management and conceptual design tools will work in this file type.
- Conceptual Design file type should be used for conceptual design only. Only tools from Conceptual Design tool box will be active in this file type.
- 2D Extraction file type should be used for all extraction and sheet files. Only tools form BRCM 2D Extraction tool box will be active in this file type.
- Other file type allows use of all BRCM tools, it is equivalent to old single BRCM file type.
If incorrect file type is selected, this can be corrected by changing to desired file type in Document Manager (only the file type of the open DGN file can be changed).
I have custom raceway catalogs in old BRCM version, how can I migrate that to BRCM SS1 and use?
- In old BRCM dataset, open the Lib_Racewy.XML file in the Raceway folder and copy the catalog definition section
- Paste old catalog section into Lib_Racewy.XML file in BRCM SS1 dataset. Location where catalog section is copied determines order in which new catalog will appear in Raceway Router.
- Copy the four relate CAT files for the custom catalog from old BRCM dataset to new BRCM dataset (raceway folder).
- Copy all DNA files for the custom catalog from the old dataset to the new dataset (depending on catalog type there can be up to 32 different DNA files per each catalog)
The custom catalog is now available in BRCM SS1 and ready to use.
You may want to consider adding additional attributes to old catalogs and updating raceway definitions to use newly established raceway size attributes: Trade Width and Trade Height and Loading Width and Loading Height. Old catalogs had only Width and Height definitions.
