Question:

I was under the impression that Drawing Extraction Manager would at some point be phased out.  We've been using it to create our drawings but should we continue?  If so, can we plan on it being in future versions of AECOsim Building Designer?  If it is going to be removed, what is the recommended method to duplicate it's functionality?

Answer:

Yes, Drawing Extraction Manager has been omitted from CONNECT Edition in favor of Dynamic View based workflows.

Dynamic View capabilities and performance have been significantly enhanced in CONNECT Edition compared with the final V8i version of AECOsim Building Designer, SS6 Update 1.

The Drawing Extraction Manager still serves a purpose in AECOsim Building Designer V8i; e.g., the RAM Import > Drawing Generation feature that is integrated with the Structural Drawing Center, which itself uses the Drawing Extraction process.

It’s also worth mentioning that there is a tool for converting existing Drawing Extraction definitions into Drawing View definitions. By selecting a drawing definition within the Drawing Extraction Manager dialog and clicking on the “Sync Drawing View to Drawing Def” tool - the center icon across the top of the Drawing Extraction Manager dialog box - a new definition will be automatically created in the Saved View dialog. This new Saved View definition will use every drawing view setting that is common between the two; e.g., Region settings, Plan Symbol usage, Cut Patterns, etc.  Having this tool in place allows you to continue using Drawing Extraction for your immediate production needs, test Drawing Views to see how they fit into your workflows, and then when appropriate transition without having to recreate everything.

You can also generate a Cached version of your Drawing View and use those as an insitu extraction: see http://communities.bentley.com/products/building/building_analysis___design/w/building_analysis_and_design__wiki/13539.reusing-a-cached-drawing-view-for-milestones.aspx for more detail.
