Adding Areas To The Location Hierarchy

Bentley Facilities Planner creates area links automatically. You need only add the highest-level area(probably a location) to the location hierarchy, since all the links below this level will be created automatically by Bentley Facilities Planner.

When you create an area inside another area whose class is higher in the hierarchy, Bentley Facilities Planner automatically links the two areas. These areas can be in the same file, or the parent area can be in a reference file. Provided that reference file locate is switched on,the link is created.

If an area has not been added to the location hierarchy automatically, you can add it manually. You can delete areas from the hierarchy and move them from one parent area to another. You can also delete or move sections of the hierarchy including all the items in the section on the levels below the one being deleted or moved (see Moving And Deleting Assets - Deleting Assets).

Locations can be added to other locations, but not to any other type of area. This allows you to define a hierarchy of locations, starting at an international level, down through the various countries in which an organization has offices, to the cities where these offices are located.

Sites can be added to locations, but not to any other type of area. Buildings can only be added to sites or locations. Floors can only be added to buildings. Zones can only be added to floors, not to other zones.Rooms can only be added to zones or floors, not to other rooms. Any of these areas can form the top level of the hierarchy, but placing anything other than a location at the top restricts the number levels available in the hierarchy.

To add an area to the hierarchy

  1. Open the Browse window (Planner > Browse).

  2. Expand the location hierarchy until the name of the area containing the one you are adding is visible.

  3. In MicroStation, select the area to be added to the hierarchy.

  4. Press the <Ctrl> key, drag the area into the Browse window.
Note: Instances can only be dropped at the top level in the Browse window.
  5. When the Location Link menu appears, click it.
The area adds to the location hierarchy below the parent area.
