Working With Hierarchies in Planner

In Bentley Facilities Planner, you can create logical items in the database that have no graphical representation in the design file, such as a company, division, or department. You can create an entire hierarchy of these items (like the organizational structure in the demonstration model), and then link objects in the organizational structure to physical objects in a structure such as a building, by relating rooms to the departments who own them, buildings to the companies that own them, and so on.

Creating An Organizational Hierarchy

The organization hierarchy consists of items such as Companies, Divisions and Departments. You can also allocate Room areas to Departments and they are inserted into this hierarchy in exactly the same way as in the location hierarchy. You select the department to which the room is allocated, instead of the zone or floor it occupies. Before building the organization hierarchy, you must create these organizational items in the database.

A Company can only exist at the top level of the hierarchy. You can have as many companies as you wish in the organizational hierarchy, but only at the top. A division can only belong to a company, not to a department or another division. A department can belong to either a company or a division, but not to another department. Rooms can only belong to departments, not to divisions or companies. Room areas are the only area class objects which can be linked to a department.

Divisions and departments can be entered in the hierarchy at the top level, but they would normally belong to a company.

When creating the hierarchy, you must use searches to locate the organizational elements. You can then drag them from the Search window and drop them at the top level in the Browse window Bentley Facilities Planner.
