In OpenPlant Modeler CONNECT Edition, requirement is to create custom symbol if user wants to create his own symbol instead of default ones.
Background
Sometimes user need to define the symbol for the components as per their requirement and not use the default symbols for some components.
Below is the illustration for creating Custom Symbol for Butterfly Valve in OpenPlant Isometric Manager, by creating a symbol in cell library.
Steps to Accomplish
- Launch OpenPlant Modeler, Create a Pipeline and place a Butterfly valve as shown below.

- Now generate the isometric drawing for created pipeline with valve as below which is in Default Environment.Notice the Symbol for Valve which is coming from Default.

- We will now change the symbol shown above and create a symbol as per our requirement.
- Click on Open Template in OpenPlant Isometric Manager, then click on valve as we are going to change the symbol for Valve which will open the template for Valves.
This template is the library for all the symbols related to Valves.

Path for the Cell Template: C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenPlant CONNECT Edition\Configuration\Workspaces\WorkSpace\Standards\OpenPlant\IsometricsManager\CellTemplates
- So here we will be changing the symbol for Butterfly Valve, select the box as shown below and right click on it and select Copy and paste the selected item at the bottom.

- Now change the workflow from Isometric to Drawing and use MicroStation drawing tools to create a desired symbol.
- Click on trim multiple, select the circle and then select the line in middle and it will remove line and create a line horizontal at the top and bottom and a diagonal one.

- Our final symbol should look something like below image.

- Change the workflow to isometric now and click on Fence and select the new created symbol using Fence by Block.

- Once the Symbol is fenced, click on Create Cell option and provide the Cell Name as “BUTIF” and Hit OK.

NOTE: The reason for giving Cell name as BUTIF because of IE_SYMBOL in isometric drawing is "BUTIF" (check step 1 image). We can also see the IE_SYMBOL by hovering over the valve generated in isometric drawing.
- Once done, regenerate the isometric to check if the symbol is changed.
