Background
Synchronizing the DGN file to iTwin for design review requires a Bridge/Connector that can convert the DGN file to a BIM file (model with business properties embedded) and push the BIM file to iTwin.
Currently we only have Bridge for OpenBuildings Designer, Civil and MicroStation.
If you want to sync a DGN file, ensuring that all the business properties related to raceways and equipment are included in the iTwin, you should follow the procedure in this article.
We are configuring Bentley Raceway and cable Management to use the MicroStation bridge and sync to iTwin.
Steps to Accomplish
- Launch Bentley Raceway and Cable Management, Select WorkSpace and WorkSet.
Open any DGN file which you want to push to iTwin.
For example: Raceway.dgn.

- Select Associate Project to WorkSet from Collaborate ribbon tab to associate your WorkSet with ProjectWise Project.

- Select Browse to select the ProjectWise Project in the Edit WorkSet dialog.

Note: ProjectWise Project is a project you need to create in the Connect portal. This project will be associated to the local WorkSet and hence we can use the CONNECT portal features such as Itwin synchronization, Design review, Issue Management, etc.
- You can register a new project, or you can select the existing project from the Associate Project to WorkSet window.

Note: For the selected project, the currently logged in user must be added as Team Member or else iTwin synchronizer will not show the project in the project list.
- You can see the ProjectWise Project Properties from the Backstage.

- Open the WorkSet configuration file which in this example is “BRCM_EU_EN.cfg” from the WorkSet location.
Add the following MicroStation Variables with the Schema locations and save the file.
MS_ECFRAMEWORK_SCHEMAS>C:\Program Files\Bentley\Bentley Raceway and Cable Management CONNECT Edition\BRCM\ECSchemas/;
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\BRCM CONNECT Edition\Configuration\WorkSpaces\BRCM Metric

Note: With the help of this variable MicroStation is able to read BRCM schemas and hence the MicroStation Bridge/Connector can publish the imodel to itwin with BRCM business properties.
- Open BRCM.cfg from the WorkSet Standards and comment out the entry for MS_ECFRAMEWORK_SCHEMAS.
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\BRCM CONNECT Edition\Configuration\WorkSpaces\BRCM Metric Example\Worksets\BRCM_EU_EN\Standards\BRCM

Note: MicroStation Connector will not recognize the $(BRCM_WS_SCHEMAS) variable as it is an application specific variable and that’s why we introduced the MS_ECFRAMEWORK_SCHEMAS variable in the BRCM_EU_EN.cfg with the schema locations.
- Now open the Raceway.dgn and to create a new iModel, select Open iTwin from the Collaborate ribbon tab.

- Select the Create iModel to create a new iModel.

- Name the iModel as desired and you can also add some other details in the Create an iModel dialog.

- You can see in the image below that the iModel i.e. RW_Test is now created in the Test_Project0104.

- Select Sync to iTwin from the Collaborate ribbon tab to create a connection between your design file and the created iModel.

- The Sync to iTwin tool will open the iTwin Synchronizer desktop application.
Select the ProjectWise Project and click New to create a new connection.

- Enter the Connection name, select the iModel from Map to and click Next.

- Select the MicroStation Connectors from the iModel Connectors and click Enable.

Note: For Bentley Raceway and Cable Management you only need to enable the MicroStation Bridge.
- Select Save after the connector is enabled.

- In iTwin Synchronizer, you can see the connection in the image below.
Select the Synchronize button to sync the design file and data with the iModel.

- Select the Create Named Version, enter the name and select Synchronize.

- Select Go to iModel after the synchronization is done.

- Select View to see the saved Named Versions.

- Select the Named Version and Select Open iModel.

- Select a Raceway section and you will be able to review all the business properties of the raceway.

Note: Raceway properties could be viewed in Design Review only with Scope: Assembly or Top Assembly.
