Error or Warning Message

When starting OpenBuildings Designer using the Electrical discipline shortcut, we are getting the error message: "Can not find BBES Database Server."

We've checked that our desktop shortcut is correct and that other parts of OpenBuildings Designer are working correctly.

Explanation

This error is most often the result of read/write permissions, but there are a few things you can do that should help resolve it.

How to Avoid

1. Check the BBESBIN configuration variable. The existing BBESBIN configuration variable should only point to the OpenBuildings Designer root directory - "C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\OpenBuildingsDesigner\" without specifying the \ServerApp or \bin folder. Also, be sure to have a backslash \ at the end of the folder. So, if for any reason you have redirected your ServerApp folder, which would also include the \bin and \res sub-folders, the configuration variable should not define the \ServerApp or \bin folders, but only the root folder of the OpenBuildings Designer program.

2. Make sure that you have full read/write access to these folders:

C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\OpenBuildingsDesigner\Mdlapps\
C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\OpenBuildingsDesigner\ServerApp\bin\
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\Configuration\Datasets\Dataset_Name\Metadata\

3. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager and switch to the Processes tab. Do you see BBES.EXE in the list? If so, right-click on it and choose End Process Tree.

4. Right-click on your desktop shortcut and choose the Run As Administrator option. This will elevate your permission levels for the application.

5. If running any version prior to OpenBuildings Designer CONNECT Edition Update 5, choose the Windows Start button > Control Panel > User Accounts. Click on Change User Account Control settings. If the slider is not set to the bottom-most level, please drag it all the way down and click OK - note that you will need to reboot for this change to take effect.

6. If the issue is not resolved after following the aforementioned methods, using Windows File Explorer go to C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\OpenBuildingsDesigner\Mdlapps\etfcomregister.exe and double click on it.

7. After trying all the above steps if the issue is still occurring then download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update - just the vcredist_x86.exe
