APM uses a third party product called ADPlus to monitor IvaraServer.exe processes for faults. It will automatically create memory dmp files to capture information helpful in troubleshooting problems leading to a process crash.
Monitoring the monitor
-
HouseKeeping
- Everywhere AdPlus is installed - need to monitor for dumps
- New folder is created everytime there Process restart
- Only need to keep 2 or 3 iterations of folder history
- The most recent created would be the current iteration created on most recent process startup.
- Not all folders will contain dumps,
- If there is a crash there will be a full mem dump , which needs to be reported and likely there will also be mini dumps
- If there was a controlled stop, under normal circumstances there should not be a full mem dump. There could be mini dumps, but these do not need to be reported.
- If Support is investigating and requested a manual full memory dump (eg for hang), we would be interested in the content of the folder relating to the same session as the memory dump.
-
CRASH
- AdPlus auto creation of a full memory indicates a process CRASH
- AdPlus will take the full memory dump and same it to the current iteration folder
- The process will restart and a new AdPlus folder for each service will be created
- You will find a crash dump in the folder previous to the last one created.
- All contents of this crash folder needs to be investigated. There will likely be mini dumps and a full memory dump
- Compress corresponding AdPlus folder
- Compress the files from the logs folder
- Report the incident to BentleyAPMSupport
- After file transfer is confirmed received, folder can cleaned up
-
SERVER HANG/STALE CONDITION
- AdPlus will not take the full memory dump in this case
- Crash log must be forced manually through WebMonitor or TaskManager
- After the dmp is complete, restart the Service and a new AdPlus folder will be created
- Find the hang dump
- All contents of previous to current crash folder need to be investigated. There will likely be mini dumps and a full memory dump
- Compress corresponding AdPlus folder
- Compress the whole logs folder
- Report the incident to BentleyAPMSupport
- After file transfer is confirmed received, folder can cleaned up
