This support solution explains some of the differences users will see when migrating from a deployed (i.e. in-house) SELECTserver to Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices (i.e. SELECTserver OnLine or the "hosted" server), Bentley's free licensing solution in the cloud.

Client communication differences

Client machines always communicate the same usage information to a SELECTserver, regardless of where it is located. What does change is the server name specified in the License Management Tool. Additionally, some organizations, especially larger ones, require all workstations to access the Internet through a single computer called a proxy server for security reasons. If used, information about this proxy server must be specified in the License Management Tool as well. An organization's IT staff can clarify whether a proxy server is being used. The following FAQ, provides instructions for configuring client machines. Please refer to the section titled "How do I configure client machines to use SELECTserver OnLine?" and the following section.

Server communication differences

Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices eliminates the need to install and maintain a deployed SELECTserver (i.e. in-house). This also removes web server and database server requirements as these are all maintained by Bentley. The communication process is also simplified since client machines now communicate directly to Bentley. The following two diagrams graphically portray what is communicated with a deployed SELECTserver and Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices (i.e. SELECTserver OnLine).

Note: You must be signed into Bentley Communities to download the diagrams. If a blue Download button is not visible, click the little person icon in the upper right, and enter a Bentley login when prompted. Afterward, navigate back to the page. A blue Download button will appear along the right edge now.

For V8 2004 or earlier versions of Bentley products, the SELECTserver Gateway component is required to license them. It must be installed locally on a server or directly on workstations. The following support solution provides instructions for downloading, installing, and configuring a standalone SELECTserver Gateway. As an alternative, configure the SELECTserver Gateway component on the deployed SELECTserver to use Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices. Refer to Step 4 in the following support solution.

Usage report differences

The URL (i.e. web address) for the SELECTserver administration page is different than a deployed SELECTserver:
https://selectserver.bentley.com/

Unlike a deployed SELECTserver which by default provided everyone on the local network access to the administration site, SELECTserver Online requires a Bentley login with the site administrator or co-administrator role. This is used to display the appropriate site(s) for an organization. A designated SELECT site administrator can add or remove this role using the User Management portal. Please refer to the following announcement for a User Management quick start video.

Deployed SELECTserver users who have SELECTserver 09.00.00.xxx will notice the same user interface. Users of SELECTserver 08.11.xx.xxx will notice a redesigned interface. Specifically, the left navigation bar has been moved to drop-down menus along the top.

SELECTserver 08.11.xx.xxx or earlier interface:

SELECTserver 09.00.00.xxx or Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices interface:

The Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices manual provides more information about the new reporting engine used by SELECTserver 09.00.00.xxx and SELECTserver OnLine. To access it, select Index from the Help drop-down menu.
