Navigator Basics

Introduction

This Quick Start Guide presents a brief explanation of the major features of ProjectWise® NavigatorTM and is designed to assist you in its startup and evaluation. A complete Help document can be found in Bentley Navigator by selecting Help > Contents.

Workflow

Bentley Navigator’s workflow consists of three steps:

Publish

Opening a File

To view the correct component information for native DWG or DGN files, start Bentley Navigator. In the MicroStation Manager dialog, select the correct application. For example, from the User option menu, select examples; from the Project option menu, choose the correct application. Published and package files do not require an application to be selected since the data is stored in the file.

By default the Interface is set to view only. To edit the file or to make redlines, select the correct mode from the Interface option menu.

PublIshIng Files

To facilitate the design review process, Bentley Navigator’s Publish Protected File converts original DGN and DWG files and their references into “PublishedDGN” files. These published files can be used for in-house design reviews. Bentley Navigator can combine or “package” the set of PublishedDGN files corresponding to a particular DGN or DWG file and its references into a single, protected file suitable for sending to other users or organizations.

To publish a file and its references select the Publish Protected File tool from the Publish task. Make your selections in the Publish Protected File dialog and click OK to publish. Only files that have not been previously published or are out of date are published. If you want to force publishing of all files, turn on the “Force republishing of all files” option. All protection-related options are disabled and only apply to packaged files.

Note: You can use ProjectWise® to automate publishing. Contact your sales representative for more information.

Navigating the View

The primary navigational tools can be found in the Main toolbox located on the upper right of the application window. This toolbox includes tools like Walk, Fly, Pan, Rotate, Window Area, and Fit.

Walk

The key characteristic of the Walk operation is that the elevation (Z position) of the camera (eye point) does not change as you move or turn. For example, if the camera is tilted upward or downward and you move forward, the camera’s elevation does not change.

Note: By holding down the CONTROL or SHIFT key while walking, the camera looks around or changes elevation respectively.

Fly

The Fly tool automatically moves forward along its line of sight. The speed of the camera is controlled during navigation by using the “+” or “-” keys.

Mouse

If using a wheeled mouse, you can use the mouse wheel to quickly access certain navigational tools. Rolling the wheel zooms in or out of the view while holding down the wheel button pans the view. Holding down the <shift> key and rolling the wheel button rotates the view.

Display

To control what geometry displays on the screen, turn on or off levels or reference files. The Level Display icon is located on the Primary Tools toolbox. To open the Reference Manager, select File menu > Reference.

Save Views

Views can be saved for future reference. To create or apply a saved view, from the Utilities menu select Saved Views. The Saved Views dialog opens, allowing you to quickly recall a saved view.

Reviewing Component Data

You can access component data through Element Information, Components Explorer or Component Sets.

These dialogs work on native or published files.

Markup

By default, when you open a file in the Redline workspaces, Bentley Navigator creates a redline file (named MasterFileName.rdl) that references the original file. If MasterFileName. rdl was created previously, it automatically opens for additional redlining. All redlines are made to the.rdl file and no changes are made to the original file. When in the Redline mode, an additional task appears with all the redline tools for markup. These tools include Text, Notes, Freehand and Cloud tools.
