This article describes the process of updating pump definitions from an Excel spreadsheet into a model using ModelBuilder. This can be helpful if you need to bulk update (batch update) multiple pump definitions.
Note: if you need to transfer pump definitions from one model to another, you could make use of the Pump Definition Engineering Library (purple book icon in the Pump Definitions Manager).
The first thing you would need to do, if this isn't already done, is create a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet should contain one or two worksheets, depending on the pump definition type. For multi-point pump curves, two worksheets are required, because the table of head vs. flow needs to be stored separately from the basic pump definition properties. For all other pump definition types (including single point and 3-point pump definitions), only one worksheet is needed.
"Pump Definition" Table Type required column mapping per pump definition type:
For Multi-point pump definitions, a second table must also be prepared, to store the pump definition label and the head and flow values. In the Field Mapping step in ModelBuilder, select the second worksheet on the left side, set the Table Type to "Pump Definition, Pump Curve" (found further down in the list), then map the pump definition label column to the Key Field and map the head and flow columns:
The below example contains a mix of multi point and single point pump curves, which is why you see the "Design Flow" and "Design head" columns. If you only have multi-point pump curves, then you only need the pump definition label and pump definition type columns for this first worksheet:
1. Go to Tools > ModelBuilder.
2. Select a Data Source type: (This would be the Excel spreadsheet that you have created.)
Make sure both sheet(s) is checked on the left of the dialogue box. Click on Next.
3. The next screen will have the spatial and connectivity options. Specify whether the coordinate unit in your data source is in feet or meters.
Uncheck the box next to "Create nodes if none found at pipe endpoint". Click on Next.
4. Select the check boxes as shown below then click the Next button.
5. Select the scenario you want to update and specify "Label" for the key field. Click Next.
6. For the first worksheet, select "Pump Definition" for the Table Type. For the key field select the column containing the Pump Definition label. In the bottom section, map the fields based on the bulleted list seen further above in this article, depending on the pump definition type.
Note: if you have a mix of different pump definition types, map all the fields. Fields that are not used by a particular pump definition type will simply be ignored on import.
For multi-point pump curves, set up the second worksheet to map the head and flow table:
7. On the screen asking you if you'd like to build a model now, select "Yes" and click on "Finish".
The pump definitions can be checked by going to Components > Pump Definitions. These are before the update.
The design flow and design head have been updated.
How do I import/export multiple point pump curve pump definitions into a model using ModelBuilder?
