Adding and viewing 2D results from OpenFlows FLOOD in SewerOPS

Product(s):SewerOPS
Version(s):CONNECT Edition
Area:Modeling

Overview

With SewerOPS, wastewater and stormwater operators can import 2D model data from OpenFlows FLOOD to view the impact on flooding on your system. This requires an existing computed hydraulic model built on FLOOD that is integrated with a 1D SewerGEMS or CivilStorm model file to visualize the 2D overland flow results. So, the first step to prepare this model. Before starting your FLOOD project, the current scenario in the SewerGEMS or CivilStorm model should use the Explicit (SWMM) solver. In addition, the OpenFlows FLOOD project should have the same start and stop dates and times as the 1D SewerGEMS/CivilStorm model. See this link for information on building the flood model: Integrating SewerGEMS or CivilStorm with OpenFlows Flood for 2D simulations.

Note: There is a sample file that includes OpenFlows FLOOD data. This SewerOPS sample file can found at C:\Program Files\Bentley\SewerOPS\Samples\Example 8B\Example8B.stsw.

Workflow

After completing the simulation run in FLOOD, access the FLOOD toolbox and select Urban Floods > Connect SewerGEMS model to MOHID Land Model.

Select your project’s DTM, then check the option to “Connect Simulation with SewerOPS”. Select the simulation you want to connect with SewerOPS via Explorer tab.

Be sure to see Simulation’s name in the toolbox properties:

Browse the .stsw file for SewerGEMS file and choose with your 1D model needs to force node’s ground elevation to fit DTM’s elevation, and if model is using the same coordinate projection system as the DTM.

Next configure the connection files as you did to build your project:

Click the process button to start the process.

Once this is completed, open the .stsw file in SewerOPS. In order to apply the 2D FLOOD data, go to the View tap, then select 2D Modeling > View 2D Results.

2D model results can be incorporated into a SewerGEMS or CivilStorm file with OpenFlows FLOOD, allowing an operating to view the extent of overland flow and flooding due to a given event. You can find details on how SewerGEMS/CivilStorm and OpenFlows FLOOD work together at the following link: Integrating SewerGEMS or CivilStorm with OpenFlows FLOOD for 2D Simulations.

Once the data is integrated, you can open the model in SewerOPS. Compute the model. To view the 2D results, go to View tab in the Ribbon and select 2D Modeling > View 2D Results.

Once this is done, you will see a grid over the model in the drawing pane. This represents where the 2D results for will be displayed. Note that the SewerOPS elements are still visible, so you will be able to account for where flooding may occur in relation to existing elements in the model.

To display the results, go to the Home tab and select Times. This is the Time Browser, where you can animate the results in the model over time or simply set forward to a time of interest. Animating the model with the Time Browser, you will see when the flooding will start and see the extent of the flooding as you move forward in time. Below is the results for this sample at 3 hours from the start of the simulation.
