Problem
How do I color code different properties on the same layer in the ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro?
This example uses WaterGEMS, but the same solution can be applied to SewerGEMS and HAMMER.
Background
In WaterGEMS standalone you can have a list of different color coding and you can turn them on and off quickly for a visual reference of your color coded element. In ArcMap, however, you can only color code (symbolize) one element at a time because this is the way ArcMap was designed. The solution below offers one way that you can workaround the issue, so that you can have similar functionality in the ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro platform as you would find in the standalone version.
Solution
1) Make sure to customize your GeoTable, so it contains all the fields that you want to color code in your shapefile.
1) Right-click on the layer in the table of contents (TOC) that you want to create multiple color codings for and choose Data > Export Data or Data > Export Features. This will export the data as a shapefile.
2) Once the file is saved to your chosen folder location add it to your map if you have not already chosen to do that.
3) Right click on the newly created shapefile and choose "Properties".
4) Click on the "Symbology" tab. Set your 'Categories' to 'Unique values' (see blue box below), choose your the value field that you want to color code for (see red box), click the "Add All Values" button (see green box) and adjust the breaks for the entries if necessary, and finally click the "Apply" button followed by the "OK" button.
5) Go about color coding the other layer that is associated with the geodatabase file as normal
When you are done you'll have two layers in you TOC that are color coded differently, but represent the same WaterGEMS element. You can then turn one on/off by checking/unchecking the box next to it.
