Problem
Background: ESRI introduced an advanced network management component called the Utility Network. When defining an ArcGIS geodatabase, users can optionally decide to include a Utility Network.
Can I construct or update my hydraulic model using an ArcGIS geodatabase that includes a Utility Network?
Solution
Yes. ModelBuilder works directly with the underlying features and therefore can work with a geodatabase whether it includes a Utility Network or not.
Note:
- The ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap integrated version of WaterGEMS and SewerGEMS can access the Geodatabase source type in ModelBuilder. See version compatibility here.
- On the “Specify Spatial and Connectivity Options” step (of the ModelBuilder wizard) be sure to toggle on the “Establish connectivity using spatial data” option. Feel free to use a very small “Tolerance” value (the Utility Network maintains precise accuracy when placing connected features within ArcGIS).
- As of January 2022, the available versions of the OpenFlows products do not yet directly use the alias "description" fields. The "code" value will be shown and available to be mapped. (see related discussion here). We are investigating the possibility of adding the ability to use the "Description" directly, in a future version. Tracking reference # 782625.
