How to Model Complex Geology

This video walks through the entire process involved in identifying geology lenses from borehole data and applying AutoCAD Civil 3D functionality along with HoleBASE SI to create a 3D model including several material lenses.

The techniques in this video can be used for geology modelling or contamination modelling as the HoleBASE SI Extension for AutoCAD Civil 3D allows you to access all the data in your HoleBASE SI project not just the geology data.

The main outline steps for modelling the geology are:

Identify the extent of the geology and draw Polylines representing extents in plan.

Also draw additional Polylines which will be used to "close" the extents Polylines and create the "show" boundaries to be used later in the process

Convert the Polylines into Feature Lines applying the correct elevation for the geology extents. You may find you will need to use the Elevation Editor to manually modify the if no appropriate surface is available. The elevation editor is also useful just to tweak the feature lines to the correct elevation.

Select the Feature Lines and add to the appropriate surfaces as a Break Line. Note: generally this will be four surfaces for each lens, the base of the stratum above, the lens top and base surfaces and the top of the stratum below. Repeat this for all feature lines

Now use Pedit and join the polylines to create closed boundaries.

Add a "Hide" boundary to conceal the complete geology surface, then add the individual show boundaries just to expose the areas required. Again repeat both top and base of the lens surfaces.
