How do I use the Data Tool to edit report templates?

How can I enter table tab and field names without typos?

The Data Tool is a feature that appears at the top of any text entity or column entity properties window (or for certain other data dependent entities) in REPORT DESIGN, in DATA DESIGN User System Data and other places that are "data aware". It also appears in the expression builder window that opens when you click the   button to the right of properties that can hold expressions.

The Data Tool provides quick lookup access to database fields, and the ability to paste them into property settings, eliminating the need for manual lookup and entry. It performs a similar role for functions, system data items, formatting codes, and other elements of expressions. The ability to look up and paste data and function elements into an expression—instead of manual typing—saves time and reduces the likelihood of mistakes.
At the top of the Table drop-down list is listed the tab tables that are in your data template.  Below them are the library tables, user system data expressions, symbols and report variables in your Library.  Select the appropriate field for selected table in the Field drop-down list.  Click the Paste button on the left to paste in the selected table and field, symbol, etc.

Select Functions, Data Items, Formatting Codes, Math Functions, Constants & Math Operators, and Keyset Fields from the Functions drop-down list.  Select the appropriate item from the Items drop-down list, and click the Paste button on the right.

Our project table tabs and fields are missing from the Data Tool Table and Field drop-down list.  How do I fix this?

When I open an entity in a report template I get this message.  What does it mean?

The Table and Field drop-down lists in the Data Tool are populated by assigning a data template to the report.  If this data template goes missing you will see the message above.  You can edit your report

If you have one data template that you use for cloning all your projects you can assign it to the library.  Go to DATA DESIGN Project Database.  On the menu bar, click Tools Assign Data Template to Reports.  Click the   button and select your data template.  Leave the Report List blank to select all the reports.  Check the two boxes to assign it to the Library Tables and to User System Data.  Click OK.

If you have more than one data template, you can follow the steps in the previous paragraph, and select which reports  to assign to which data template.  Or, you can open the properties of a particular report and select the data template there.
