Google Earth KML or KMZ?
With thanks to Matt Gooding and Steve Young for sharing this tip! When creating a file to display in Google Earth, you have the option of specifying either a KML or KMZ formats. While both are valid, KMZ is a simply a compressed version of KML which can significantly reduce the file size. The KMZ file can be opened with WinZip to explore it's contents. And if you really want to delve into this stuff, go ahead and open doc.kml with any text editor...that's the KML which is in XML. So, KML is XML and KMZ is a zipped KML.
