Change SACS Default Text Editor to Notepad++

Changing the Default Editor

While Bentleys Systems provides a text editor with the installation of SACS, there are other text editors that you may prefer. In this guide, we will walk through the installation of Notepad++ and updating the default text editor in the SACS settings to Notepad++.

Notepad++ is a free, open source text editor under the GPL License.

Step 1: Download and Install notepad++

Navigate to http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/  and click the download button.
Once the program downloads, run the installation.

Step 2: Change the Default Editor in SACS

Open the SACS Executive and navigate to the General Setting in SACS Settings. Your setting should look something like this:
Select the External Editor setting and click the ellipses (…) to open a file dialog. Then navigate to the installation folder for Notepad++ and select the notepad++.exe executable.
Modify the Editor Goto Switch to After filename and the Editor Goto Command to –n. Now the your General Settings should look something like this:

Text Editor Usage

Now when opening listing files through the SACS Executive or generating reports from Precede, Notepad++ will open instead of the included SACS text editor.

Also, clicking on warning or error messages in the error log will cause the listing file to open at the error line in Notepad++.

This can be done with other text editors, but you might have to consult the documentation to find the correct Goto command syntax.
