Why and How to avoid it?

Solution:

Users may receive this warning even when entering valid ASCE 7-16 Table 13.6-1 values such as Rp = 6.0 or Rp = 12.0.

Cause:

The warning occurs because AutoPIPE's implementation of ASCE 7 seismic calculations used with ASME B31E piping code checks limits the Component Response Modification Factor (Rp) to a maximum value of 3.5.

Although ASCE 7-16 Table 13.6-1 permits higher Rp values for certain nonstructural components, ASME B31E restricts the value of Rp used in piping seismic stress calculations to 3.5.

Explanation:

The Seismic B31E option in AutoPIPE is used to define seismic load cases that are combined and evaluated according to ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4 and ASME B31.8 2008 and later editions.

For these seismic stress calculations, AutoPIPE complies with the requirements of ASME B31E by limiting the Component Response Modification Factor (Rp) to 3.5. If a higher Rp value is entered in the ASCE earthquake load definition, AutoPIPE automatically uses 3.5 in the calculation and displays Warning W2261-14 to inform the user that the specified value is not valid for the selected piping design code.
