Q. How to review, edit, or add information into AutoPIPE's Flange Analysis Module library?

Objective

 The flange analysis module extracts all materials and their allowable stresses as per the 2010 ASME B&PV Code, Section II, Part D information from a designated library file known as: asme2010.db. Where is the location of this file and the steps to:

    • Open the file
    • Review existing data
    • Modify existing data
    • Add new entries

Prerequisites

Before continuing one should confirm an application is available on their computer that can physically open and save database DB file formats (example application: DB browser for SQlite). 

Next, the file is located in 2 or more locations on the computer. 

    • Program data folder for each version of AutoPIPE installed (1 or more),
      • Example: C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AutoPIPE 2026
    • AutoPIPE's installation folder:
      •  Example: C:\Program Files\Bentley\AutoPIPE 2026

Users will need read /write access to these folders respectively to make permanent changes.

Steps-by-Step Instructions

First one needs to understand how this file is used. Due to standard security protocols, users are restricted from making changes to the root C:\Program Files\ directory. Therefore, when a user launches AutoPIPE for the first time, the system copies certain files from the Installation folder to both the Program Data and APP data directories. Customizations are carried out in these designated locations. Whenever a problem arises where the file needs to be reset back to default settings, use AutoPIPE's reset defaults utility which re-copies the original installation file and overwrites the files in their respective locations. Thus, making it very important to back up any customize files for future reasons.

Notes and Best Practices

    • Always back up the original asme2010.db file before making changes
    • The codeid must be unique for each material. The convention is to combine the matspec and matgrade fields.
    • The temperature fields (tmphi1, tmphi3, etc.) control which materials are available for different analysis methods.
    • Only materials with valid temperature entries for the selected analysis method will be available for selection; those with "NP" will be excluded [2].

Use the following steps:

Open the file:

      1. Warning - it is recommended to back up the original file before making changes.
      2. Start application (ex. DB  Browser for SQLite) being used to handle DB database files. 
      3. With aforementioned information in mind, navigate to AutoPIPE folder location: 
        • C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AutoPIPE 2026 
      4. Locate and open the asme2010.DB file. 

Review DB file:

      1. Open database file.
      2. Select any Table in the database for review (example: Table = 1A_1B_Div_Flange)
      3. Add filters as needed to reduce the viewed data to specific information. 

Modify Existing values in the Database:

Remember, being a custom library file, Bentley cannot be held responsible for the inaccuracy of the new library content. It is your responsibility to verify the content

      1. With the database opened and a Table selected, make modifications as needed to the existing data.
      2. Ensure data entered is in the same format compatible for the given field.
      3. Verify links between Tables is maintained. 
      4. If adding a new links between tables, confirm data availability in both tables.
      5. After editing, save the asme2010.db file.
      6. Got to "Expected Results" below

Add a new material for use in Flange module:

      1. Warning - it is recommended to back up the original file before making changes.
      2. Insert a new row and fill out the required fields in the Div1, Div2, and Bolt tables at a minimum.
        • The essential fields include:
          • codeid (must be unique; typically a combination of matspec and matgrade)
          • tmphi1, tmphi3, tmphiVIII_1, tmphiXII (used to filter materials based on the analysis method selected; if a field is "NP", the material will not be available for that method).

Expected Results

After making any custom modifications to an AutoPIPE file, close all AutoPIPE applications and any related files or models that are currently open in AutoPIPE, text editor, database application. Next, restart AutoPIPE to ensure the new modifications are properly recognized and take effect within the program.

Verify, Verify Verify all modifications made will retrieve expected values in AutoPIPE. If the modifications are not recognized within the program, perform one or more of the following:

    • Review all modifications made. 
      • AutoPIPE is very strict, if programming information is not properly entered, formatted, located, etc. The file / data will not be read correctly.
      • One extra space, use of a Tab character instead of a spaces, wrong column alignment, wrong formatted data, etc... will not be read by the program
    • Confirm the modified file(s) are in the correct folder location. Remember AutoPIPE reads all customized data from the Settings> General> Paths. Files located in different folders are not read by the program.   

 

    • If the issue cannot be resolved, suggest starting over with a valid file that works correctly, and again slowly make customizations changes. Again, be very exact with all keystrokes.
