Problem:

After performing strength calculation on a model, the following error message in AutoPIPE Vessel appears:

60    STANDARD SHELL FLANGE : Temperature exceeds values for this rating class

66    FLANGE (nozzle XX): Temperature exceeds values for this rating class

Why and How to avoid it?

Solution:

This error occurs when the design temperature exceeds the maximum allowable temperature permitted for the selected flange material and rating class according to the applicable flange design code.

AutoPIPE Vessel verifies flange pressure-temperature ratings using the selected standard (for example, ASME B16.5). In addition to the pressure-temperature rating tables, the software also considers any material-specific notes, limitations, and temperature restrictions defined by the code.

If the specified design temperature is greater than the allowable temperature range for the selected material or rating class, AutoPIPE Vessel displays the following error:

"Temperature exceeds values for this rating class."

Common reasons include:

  1. The design temperature exceeds the maximum temperature covered by the pressure-temperature rating table.
  2. The selected material has a code-imposed temperature limitation.
  3. Material-specific notes in the flange standard restrict the use of the material above a certain temperature.
  4. The selected flange rating class is not valid at the specified design temperature.

Example

For ASME B16.5 Table 2-2.1, A182 Grade F304 is subject to Note (1), which limits its use to a maximum temperature of 538°C (1000°F). Therefore, if a design temperature of 585°C is specified, AutoPIPE Vessel will generate the error because the material is being used outside its allowable temperature range.

Resolution

  • Select a material and flange rating class that are valid for the required design temperature.
  • Re-run the flange verification after updating the design conditions.
  • If the selected material A182 Gr. F304 is permitted for use above 538°C based on the applicable carbon content requirements and project specifications, the following workaround can be used:
    1. Open customizable file StandardFlangeReferenceTable.xlsx (Path: C:\Users\Public\Bentley\AutoPIPE Vessel\AutoPIPE_Vessel_47\Config)
    2. Locate the material A182GRF304.
    3. Either:
      • Remove the Note associated with the material, or
      • Duplicate the row, create a new material name, and remove the Note from the new entry.
    4. Save the file and Move to Production.
    5. If a new material was created, add the same material to the Material Database and use it in the model.
