Question:
What is the significance of this warning when it appears in my AutoPIPE Vessel report:
-
- 365 FLANGE BC: the required space above the bolt is not available ( required=24 mm ; actual=22.225 mm ) (see: files boltISO.xlsx and/or boltUN.xlsx).
- 360 FLANGE BF: the required space under the bolt is not available ( required=32 mm ; actual=28.575 mm ) (see: files boltISO.xlsx and/or boltUN.xlsx).
Answer:
The suggested dimensions are dependent upon the dimensions recommended by the equipment manufacturer or relevant codes.
The objective is to ensure sufficient space surrounding the bolt to enable the use of tools required to tighten / loosen bolting. The values provided by AutoPIPE Vessel are suggested by manufacturers and TEMA (for example, TEMA Table D-5M).
Example:
Give the following Body Flange and Cover Properties information

As indicated in the warning message, see: files boltISO.xlsx and/or boltUN.xlsx)
(file location = Customizable Database Files Path (default- C:\Users\Public\Bentley\AutoPIPE Vessel\AutoPIPE_Vessel_47\Config)

Again, as indicated by the messages:
-
-
-
- Actual space above the bolt was 22.225 mm, however the tool recommended spacing suggests 24 mm
- Actual space under the bolt was 28.575 mm, however the tool recommended spacing suggests 32 mm
Avoidance options
-
-
- Accept the warning and do nothing. This runs the risk of not being able to effectively tighten loosen bolting in this area of the equipment.
- Make the necessary setting changes in the model that will accommodate the suggested spacing requirements.
- Manually update the Excel tables (boltISO.xlsx and/or boltUN.xlsx) with customized values.
- Select a Standard flange size. (note when designing a flange, additional checks are conducted that would not typically be carried out when specifying a standard flange. Even if you design a flange with the precise dimensions of a standard flange, these extra checks may still trigger a warning to appear.)
