Issue # 1983105
Date created 10 March 2026
Date modified 10 March 2026

Problem description

PLAXIS enables the integration with Bentley Systems’ ProjectWise
When using the latest version of ProjectWise (for example, 25.0.2) together with PLAXIS 2024.3 or earlier, an error can occur during startup, preventing PLAXIS from starting or loading a project.

The following window appears (example from PLAXIS 2D):

When you click the “Show bug report” option, the exception message in the General tab includes the following:
“Access violation at address 00007FFDF22A92A0 in module 'MSVCP140.dll'. Read of address 0000000000000000.”

Workaround

This issue is resolved in PLAXIS 2D/3D 2025.1. Download the latest PLAXIS version here.

The issue is caused by the presence of the “msvcp140.dll” in the installation folder.

The “msvcp140.dll” file is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package, and is provided with the installation of PLAXIS 2024.3 and earlier. The version of the file provided with the PLAXIS installation conflicts with what the newer version of ProjectWise runs at startup triggering the aforementioned access violation error.

By removing this file, PLAXIS can operate without problems, and the PLAXIS integration with Bentley Systems’ ProjectWise can be fully functional without errors.
Hint: The direct use of ProjectWise Explorer is not affected by this workaround.

Steps to fix the issue (when applicable)

The steps below may require administrative rights.

  1. Locate the installation folder for PLAXIS 2D or PLAXIS 3D.
By default, this is located at:
    C:\Program Files\Seequent\
    or
    C:\Program Files\Bentley\Geotechnical
  2. In the installation folder, locate the file named “msvcp140.dll”.
  3. Apply one of the two options below:
    • Option 1: Rename the file by adding a single underscore character at the beginning (_); see screenshot below.
    • Option 2: Delete (*) the file from the directory or move it to a different folder (e.g., Desktop).
  4. Done! This should prevent PLAXIS from reading the specific “msvcp140.dll” file and allow it to launch without issues.

This DLL is shipped with PLAXIS and is not a system-wide file. Deleting or renaming it only affects PLAXIS and can be safely reverted by either using the PLAXIS installation to “Repair” it or by restoring the file name.
