Cause:

There are situations when a Microsoft Office update fails, the computer can be left in a broken state. Many programs including Bentley products like MicroStation depend on the Microsoft C++ runtime. When the Microsoft C++ runtime is damaged from a failed Microsoft Office update, MicroStation and many other commercial programs will fail to start. We have reported this situation to Microsoft. Microsoft is investigating and developing a fix.

Troubleshooting:

Step 1: Go to Event Viewer

Step 2: Go to Windows Logs>Application, allow time for log to appear

Step 3: Filter on and 'Errors' or Warnings'

The only workaround of this issue is to repair the Microsoft C++ runtime. There are multiple ways to initiate a repair:

Troubleshooting Option 1:

Repair installation of Microsoft component, 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64).

Step 1: Open Control Panel > Programs and Features or run appwiz.cpl

Step 2: Go to the search and type in 'Microsoft Visual C++' locate the "Microsoft Visual C++ [Year] Redistributable" packages (both x64 and x86).

Step 3: Select 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 - 2022 Redistributable (x64)'

Step 4: Right-click and select Change

Step 5: Select the Repair option

Troubleshooting Option 2:

Use Windows PowerShell to download and run the Microsoft C/C++ runtime:

Step 1: Invoke-WebRequest 'https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe' -OutFile vc_redist.x64.exe -UseBasicParsing

Step 2: vc_redist.x64.exe /repair /quiet /norestart

After the repair has been done restart your machine. Once you have rebooted you should now be able to open MicroStation.
