Welcoming Google Maps to OpenRoads and OpenRail Designer. Replacement of Bing Maps for Enterprise.

As we continue to enhance OpenRoads, we will be replacing Bing Maps for Enterprise with Google Maps starting with the OpenRoads and OpenRail Designer 2025 release. The integration of Google Maps will upgrade your mapping experience, delivering superior imagery and real-world context directly into your workflow.

Bing Maps will continue to function in previous versions of OpenRoads and OpenRail Designer (versions 10.02, 2023, and 2024) until June 30, 2028, and when dgn files that integrate Bing Maps are opened in OpenRoads and OpenRail Designer 2025, Google Maps will automatically display instead of Bing Maps. Please note, since June 30, 2024, no new customers have been able to license Bing Maps for Enterprise, as it has been retired by Microsoft (click here for more details).

OpenRoads 2025 onwards will exclusively use Google Maps. This transition is designed to significantly enhance your experience. Google Maps, a platform trusted by billions, brings superior image quality, accuracy and more recent data. It offers a world-class mapping platform with improved imagery quality, update frequency, and global coverage.

You'll experience the same familiar embedded mapping workflows, now powered by Google. This integration means you can enhance your infrastructure designs with instant real-world site context, zooming in on project areas with precise aerial imagery to make confident, context-aware design choices. You can quickly view up-to-date roads, land parcels, and landmarks within your design environment, which helps reduce guesswork and improve stakeholder confidence. Google Maps is embedded natively within Bentley’s geospatial and design environments, eliminating the need for external exports or data conversions.

To benefit from these improvements, you must upgrade to OpenRoads Designer 2025. Our support team is ready to assist you throughout this transition, ensuring a seamless experience. This partnership between Bentley and Google aims to bring live, global context to infrastructure projects, allowing you to design in sync with the real world.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we bring you the most trusted, high-resolution, and frequently updated map data, built for better decisions.
