When opening existing projects in PLAXIS 2D or 3D 2024.3 (24.03.00.95), the software incorrectly displays all available dynamic boundary condition options (None, Viscous, Free-field, Compliant base, Tied degrees of freedom) for each model boundary (e.g., BoundaryXmin, BoundaryXmax, BoundaryYmin, etc.), regardless of whether they are valid for that specific boundary.
The table below outlines the expected valid dynamic boundary condition options for each model boundary in PLAXIS 2D and 3D. Default values are indicated in brackets.
PLAXIS 2D:
BoundaryXMin | None, [Viscous], Free-field , Tied degrees of freedom |
BoundaryXMax | None, [Viscous], Free-field , Tied degrees of freedom |
BoundaryYMin | [None], Viscous, Compliant base |
BoundaryYMax | [None], Viscous |
All nodes fixities | [None], Fixed in x-direction, Fixed in y-direction |
PLAXIS 3D:
BoundaryXMin | None, [Viscous], Free-field |
BoundaryXMax | None, [Viscous], Free-field |
BoundaryYMin | None, [Viscous], Free-field |
BoundaryYMax | None, [Viscous], Free-field |
BoundaryZMin | [None], Viscous, Compliant base |
BoundaryZMax | [None], Viscous |
All nodes fixities | [None], Fixed in x-direction, Fixed in y-direction, Fixed in z-direction |
This means, although all dynamic boundary condition options are visible in the Model explorer, only the valid options listed above should be used. For instance, the Tied Degrees of Freedom feature is not supported in PLAXIS 3D. Unfortunately, PLAXIS Input does not provide a warning during calculation if an invalid option is used, which may result in unexpected dynamic boundary behavior.
This issue occurs only when opening an existing project in PLAXIS 2D or 3D 2024.03. It does not affect newly created project files, where the correct boundary options are displayed as expected.
For users working with PLAXIS 2D and 3D 2024.03, please refer to the tables above to ensure the correct selection of valid dynamic boundary condition options for each model boundary.
This issue does not occur in earlier versions (2024.2 and prior), where the displayed options are consistent with the valid configurations listed.
We are working on a solution to fix this issue in the future versions.
