Introduction

Many natural soils are highly stratified due to the depositional environment, particularly in lacustrine or coastal marine environments. Cretaceous shale deposits throughout western Canada, for example, often have thin bentonite-rich layers. These layers can have low shear strength and therefore govern the stability of both natural and man-made slopes. This example illustrates how to analyze a slope containing multiple weak layers.
