On July 28, 2025, the Infrastructure Cloud launched enhancements to design and construction workflows to help engineering and construction teams work better together across project phases and meet the growing demands and complexities of infrastructure project delivery. 

With these enhancements, all “Design” projects are now listed as “Project” under “Type of Project.” Below is a list of frequently asked questions regarding the changes:

 

Q:  Why is Bentley changing the project type from Design to Project?

A:   In an effort to provide a cohesive experience throughout the project lifecycle, we are implementing a singular project which will provide workflows to take the user through both design and construction phases of a project in preparation for eventual handoff to the owner operator.

 

Q:  Will this affect any of my data in my current projects?

A:  Any existing data in your Design projects will not be affected by the change. This change is just adding additional functionality relating to construction workflows formally only available through SYNCHRO Control.

 

Q:  Will I still be able to create new projects using my organization template projects?

A:  Yes, all of your existing Design templates will be available when creating or reprovisioning projects.

 

Q:  Are there any additional entitlements need to access the new Build functionality?

A:  No, your existing Manage, Engineer or Validate entitlements are still valid to benefit from the new functionality. However, access to the Administration section of the interface and the ability to configure some of the new functionality is still controlled by the entitlement a user is assigned.

 

Q:  Will my SYNCHRO Control projects be converted to the new 'Project' type?

A:  Not initially, but a process will be available at a later date to convert SYNCHRO Control projects to the new 'Project' type if the user is using one of the Manage, Engineer or Validate entitlements.

 

Q:  If I have a SYNCHRO license, will I have access to this project type?

A:  If you have a SYNCHRO 4D practitioner license, it will include a Validate entitlement enabling you to access this project type.

 

Q:  What added functionality does the 'Project' type offer to current users?

A:  The new 'Project' enables some new functionalities that were previously available only in SYNCHRO Control projects including:

• 4D iModel creation: A 4D iModel is where you add a fourth dimension of time, or your project schedule, to a 3D model. These enhancements will allow you to incorporate a 4D schedule into your iModel using an SP file generated by SYNCHRO Pro (v6.5 or later). Please note that a SYNCHRO 4D entitlement is needed to create and edit the SP file.

• PDF Plan Sets: You will now be able to upload plan sets for your projects and with the PDF Settings, create individual PDF sheets from the plan set. This enhancement enables you to input data for each sheet, create updated versions of a sheet, and compare between versions of a sheet or against other sheets.
• Inspections Module: The Inspections module will allow you to create inspection form definitions and a pay item structure in a configuration file that can be uploaded through the Inspections Configuration page. Once the configuration is completed, the form definitions will be added and available for editing through the Forms Manager or by creating Inspection Instances from the form definitions.
• Hierarchy Tree Configuration: When an Inspection Configuration file is uploaded, a hierarchy tree will be created. The Hierarchy Tree Configuration allows an administrator to manage items in the hierarchy tree. Items can be added or removed using the controls on the side panel or by importing an Excel configuration file.
• Cost Codes Configuration: The Cost Codes Configuration module, previously only available in SYNCHRO Control, will allow you to set up cost codes, download sample filed, template files, and rules and formulas for creating cost codes. Please note that SYNCHRO Modeler is needed to assign cost codes.
