Problem:
I have multiple 3D models from which I have created several drawings. I generally do not keep the drawing model and the sheet model in the same file where the 3D model belongs. After creating the drawings, sometimes I have to edit the drawing file names so that I can meet the client's needs. The problem is, whenever I rename the drawing file, I lose the link of the drawing file to its 3D master file from which it has been created.
When I hover over the placed call out in the 3D model, I do not see the option to 'Open Target'.
It also shows the previous name of the drawing if I click on the dropdown.
How can I get the link back?
Solution:
It is generally recommended to decide the naming conventions of the drawing files beforehand so that there is no need to change them after their creation. But, if you do not have any other option than changing it, you can follow the steps mentioned below to re-establish the linkage of the drawing to its 3D master model.
1. Open the 3D model on OBD from which the drawing has been created.
2. Open the Saved Views dialog box from Building Design > Drawing Production > Create Views > Saved Views.
3. In the Saved Views dialog box, right-click on that save view from which the drawing has been created. Then click on 'Properties'.
4. In the Properties panel, click on the Drawing Link showing previous name of the file. Then click on the three dots icon in the 'File Name' to browse to the location where the renamed drawing file has been kept and select it.
5. Once the 'File Name' field is modified, the 'Link Name' and 'Full Path' will change automatically.
6. Now, select the Reference Link showing the previous name of the file and change the 'File Name' similarly as described in step 4.
7. Now, hover over the call out and you'll see that the 'Open Target' button has appeared and also the drawing file name has changed to reflect the correct name.
This is how you can re-establish the link between the drawing file and 3D master file after renaming the drawing file.
